View Full Version : Wishbone Bushes

One of the Advisories from my recent MOT was that both front suspension wishbones have worn inner bushes, does this mean that both bushes on each wishbone have worn and can they be replaced without replacing the Wishbone itself, or do I need new Wishbones, which I can get fitted with poly bushes or do I just need new bushes, again I can get them as poly bushes.

Assuming this is a 2wd V70 or any (well, almost) 850, there are two bushes that can be replaced. On most 850 (after 1994 I think) the ball joint is an integral part of the wishbone (before that you could swap it out). The reason I mention this is that if your bushes are knackered, the liklihood is that the lower ball joint is on it's way too. Yes, they do cost £90 each, but I just bought two new wishbones complete from Rufe at FRF Volvo Swansea, and fitted them. It is a pretty simple job providing you have a reasonable toolkit and a hydraulic jack - three bolts hold the 'bone in place. Took me about an hour per side to change. Yes you could get Powerflex bushes, but these cost around £60 IIRC and then you have to fit them which is a bit of a labour to get right. I would not get a pattern-part wishbone or bush - they will not last.

Lower polybushes for these are less than 30 quid for both sides from euro carparts and yes they are powerflex ones. changing them don't look too hard.

Be warned. If you have an ex-plod car with the original bones then the PowerFlex front bushes are more difficult to fit. The bush is bonded rubber - as opposed to hydraulic - and is the devil's own job to remove.

It needs to be burned out and the rubber remooved from inside the bush shell (difficult) and the steel spindle (easy). The spindle is also the wrong shape for the PowerFlex bush and the only solution is to have it machined.

Apart from that, it's p1$$ easy . . . comparitively

The rear (vertical) bush is easy enough, a 12 ton press makes short work of it :)

Bugger - mine's ex-plod with all the plod brake and suspension trimmings!
