hi everyone

recently purchased a V70R AWD, and just wanted to ask one question regarding it. when in D, and when you casually driving the box sounds very labourious when going through the gears - a friend who was sitting next to me said is it supposed to sound like that.

it upshifts and downshifts smoothly and in S mode fires through the gears. maybe i got that new car paranoia - does it sound lazy when in D or do i need to get it checked out?

Probably worth getting it checked out.

Change the fluid, it can't do any harm...

Use the correct (JWS or ATF-U) fluid DON'T BUY SO CALLED 'GENUINE' VOLVO STUFF, THEY DON'T MAKE IT and use 5 to 8 litres to flush the box.

Be prepared to shed tears of frustration at the lack of service, knowhow, expertise or - in Volvo's case customer care - as 'specialist' after 'specialist' tells you that it can't be repaired.

Or it can be repaired but they want 2 grand for the job.

Or you can part with 4 ****ing GRAND and have a new gearbox.

Mine's on the block at the earliest opportunity.

what year, has it had revised angle gear fitted? not sure how much noise failing angle gear would make, and what noise yours is actually making

What year is this car? '99> have the Adaptive learning gearbox so your explanation of the symptoms is very difficult to asertain without actually driving the car oneself. If you drive it nicely and not agressive then it will change gear quite quickly and below 2k. It all depends how far your right foot is planted. The first thing you should really check out is the ETM as this will have a massive effect on gear changes and is directly linked to your gearbox ecu electronically. Pre '99 cars are different, completely!!

Any tinkling noises or clicking when turning left or right that increase in frequency indicates dry prop shaft cv's. Common fault and easily rectified or a new prop for £700! Search in the forum and you will find my comprehensive instructions inc pictures on how to rectify.
