View Full Version : Embarking on Engine build.

Hi peeps,

A few questions about the T5 engine build which I am researching (about to start). It will be done over time, as funds allow, to a doner engine purchased from Niles.
I'll still have my T5 on the road during this time so there is no rush. I plan on using stock pistons, steel rods, new mains and rod bearings and rings. Also check everything else is sound. This is the first time I will have done anything like this and Niles has kindly said he will help me as much as he can as has Justin (t5 lover).

I want to take advantage of the T3 flange on the T5 manifold and maybe go for a GT3076R or similar. Or even this which I found on a previous thread here. Seems a great price for a good quality turbo. Here is the post:

Will I need an adaptor plate to fit a T3 flanged turbo? Or just grind off the lip on the Volvo manifold?

I know I won't be able to put the power down straight away and will need loads of supporting mods. ATM I will be just concentrating on the engine build and want to get my spec right first time. I don't want to be changing components say from a 18t to 19t then K24 then Gt30 etc. as this will be more expensive and time consuming, not to mention all the different maps and setups. I know I will eventually need a gripper diff and better suspension components and brakes but looking past this what do you guys think?

I may be completely flawed in my thinking so put me right if need be! Any advice is appreciated.

Nice one mate. You still up too lol. My night shifts have well and truly stuffed my sleep pattern.

What business you doing? Breaking or servicing repairs etc. With the knowledge between you, you will no doubt do very well. When are you about next. I'm off now for 10 days.

Machine the lip off the manifold with a slight 6-10 degree taper in at the top more than normal to give a little more clearance at the mount. Rebuild the head with new seals and cam followers (hydraulic lifters). Replace the main bearings and rod bearings with either genuine or Mahle Clevite triplelayer bearings. Only use the crank if it is not worn or marked. Make sure it is measured properly with a calibrated micrometer or get a machine shop to measure it for you. I bought my bearings from Rock Asuto for half the price of Genuine ones and the quality is very good. Buy genuine rings and make sure they are fitted correctly with the markings on the rings in the correct orientation. Make sure the deflection of the valves is within Volvo recommended spec as the guides can wear and this will mean either a new/different head or extensive machineshop work for replacement guides and new valves. Newer 2001 on heads use smaller valve stems of just under 6mm compared to the 7mm of earlier heads so effectively creating a larger port area if nothing else. You would need to run VVT delete blanks for pulleys though as the newer heads run VVT systems. This is what I have done. Turbos with under a 65mm inducer on the Turbine impellar are best as you will come into some serious lag otherwise. My turbo is not in boost till very late on because of its physical size. Make sure your turbo drain is also large enough and at a big enough gradiant for oil to actually drain well to the sump/block. The drain on my new turbo is a rigid 3/4 pipe into the standard drain hole which is brilliant compared to the K24 drain I ran on the K24 before this. You will cause what seems to be an oily blown turbo unless it is adequate.

Alan thanks a lot for this advice! I will no doubt be referring back to this in the near future. This is going to be a very steep learning curve for me. Luckily I have Niles and Justin to point me in right direction!

Very similar mods to mine, except I'm using a GT3071R with a T25 flange, and I have forged pistons. Everything Alan has said its 100% correct, example, I have a 3mm oil feed to my turbo (GT need less oil fed to them) , the drain is 19mm!

Make sure yo spec the GT with a metal caged bearing, they normally come with a plastic caged one.

What brakes you going to be using? Also worth thinking about some form of LSD diff.
