Could the engine tapping be being caused by a knackered con rod? What sort of noise and problems to there make when they bend? Thanks

Could be a spun bearing mate...have a listen to this and see if it's a similar noise:

If you've not run it too long you may get away with just removing the sump and replacing the rod bearings...may being the operative word though :(

I bought a Mazda 6 1.8, with a tapping Just like that, Drove it 11 miles and the it spat a Rod through both sides of the Block!

Number 3 had given up the ghost! oil way in crank was elongated, and bottom of rod ended up into number 4 Bore... very messy.

Seriously stop driving it if it sounds like that and investigate.
