A bit of a strange question, but has anyone fitted / welded an external wastegate to there exhaust manifold? just wondering the best place to cut the hole and weld on the mount.

rt has 1 on the peril m8 , theres 2 ways to have the wastgate , not sure about the rest of it

RT has a custom manifold though, I'm just going to weld one onto the standard t5 manifold

Maby something like this:

It can be done. You have to cut off the turbo flange and weld on another with a takeoff on it for the external wastegate. I know someone who has done this and it worked well with the wastegate exhaust back into the downpipe. He no longer has the car so I can't show you a pic but I may have one on the computer but it may take a while to find if I still have it. You may struggle with the size of your tubo though if you do it the way I said as that tubo looks fairly large. I had to machine my manifold down to get my turbo in the bay which looks a similar physical size to yours.

I Do have a very very big hammer :haha:, If you can find a pic, it would be much appreciated.

if the manifold is cast youll prob end up having problems with cracks. you'd need to find out whats in the material to be welded first.

Ive got an old me7 mani you can have to practise on first if you want it? got a couple of cracks on the inlet, you could pick up your block at the same time :) lol.

Cheers James, I've got an old manifold here, any chance of picking up the block on the way back from York?

Sorry Colin I can't find the picture. I'm off work today so had a good look through all of them on the harddrive and couldn't see it. I had to 'ahem' alter my firewall slightly to get clearance but it will be very tight with an external gate port on the flange.

Any reason why I can't weld it onto the hot side of the Turbo?

Sounds like a good plan :)

Its crude but can work but your destroying the turbo to a degree should you wish to do anything else with it. You need to do a spark test on the turbine housing aswell or send a sample off for examination to identify the type and grade of materials used so that you can use the correct grade rods for welding.

nar a meant as in theres 2 places to have the wastegate , before or after the turbo , just didnt know the names , google it , rt has his external wastegate after the turbo , that way you can use a stadard manifold but would need a custom down pipe which you will probs need if you plan on usiing a big enough turbo

bit like that if you can make it out

A wastegate is used to release the exhaust gases past the turbine so should be used to remove gas pre turbine to reduce turbine speed. Look at this link for an example on an 850 manifold.http://www.tig-art.com/web/8888/nsf/ProLookup.taf?_function=details&_ID=146776&PF=&did=1193&G=&lang=EN&SM=&_UserReference=81993F00888D81544DD2DC4F The wastegate is never used after the turbo as that would defeat the job of the wastegate.

This link shows one for a turbo that will have a port inside the housing that will vent gases pre turbine when the wastegate opens.
