850R M59 manual gearbox repair

Been quoted the following:

"the best advice I can offer if your box has only just started being noisy, is to stop driving the car and consider a repair to your gearbox now. if caught early enough a repair to your gearbox would cost as follows;

labour to strip and rebuild......£95.00
collection and delivery..... £80.00
assume one bearing failure... £35.00

all prices subject to vat.
if you gearbox requires more than one bearing then we would quote for any extras once the gearbox is open, but you would have final say over what we replace."

Does this sound fair? i mean could I get it repaired cheaper anywhere? i intend on having this one taken out, a replacement put in and my old one repaired as a spare

Olton Gearboxes in Birmingham are very good at repairs and quite good on price. I've used them for varying work over the years and they have been great guys to deal with.

Doesn't sound too out of the way, but be prepared for it not to be as simple as one bearing.

I have been chasing a gearbox fault on the S70R since last June and only just got it sorted. Some very experienced people guessed at a diagnosis and got it wrong along the way. I ended up with the box being rebuilt with the complete gear set from another less worn box, the bearings were not the problem in my case.

Personally while it's all apart id get all the bearings done especially when you consider that all the bearings are of the same age and mileage and are likely to be in a similar condition. Add to that the possibilty that the other bearings may have suffered damage as a result of swarf from the failed bearing and could fail shortly after rebuilding the box and replacing the original failed part.

Seems a fair price to me, if it more than 1 bearing, its not going to cost alot more.

Sorry for my bad English.

three years ago, a bloody mechanic changed my clutch , without screwing gearbox correctly, so the gearbox was moving away and clutch worked at an angle. So last July, after only 38.000 km, it was dead! A French Volvo Forum member who is also mechanic did the job. But the gearbox is still noisy when I engage 1st gear (plus 3rd to 4th and 4th to 3rd are quite hard). And this first error caused another problem : the gearbox worked at an angle, and caused a gap between two parts of the engine (cylinder block and crankshaft block ? On top of this, not between crankshaft block and oil sump). Oil leaks at rear left side. No oil in clutch cage, but just next to it, outside and behind... But it's another story (and a friend will have a look to screw these blocks correctly once oil sump will be removed. Hope oil leak will stop)...

I'd like to know if repairing a M59 using M56H internals (except diff, kept from the M59) is possible, please. Is it just plug'n'play (replace internal shafts) or does it need adjustments or a gearbox specialist's help, please?

Volvo 850R are very rare in France, UK scrapyards refuse to send heavy gearboxes...

Any help would be much appreciated, guys.

Sounds like rear main oil seal failed. Why don't you drive to England to collect gearbox?

Yes, the M59 can be repaired using an M56 gearset. That's how mine was fixed.

I do have a spare gearbox and my dad does get to France every now and then. If you are not in a rush I should be able to get a box over to you

Many thanks for the info. I'm very busy this year (so I can't come in England) and I found an alternative solution and a good and unexpected M59. My car will be repaired in few months.

Pulled out of a junction last night turning right, and there were two little 'lurches' from the drivetrain. And afterwards a mechanical rumbling whirring noise. My hunch is an M59 viscous coupling issue...although the noise seems to come from the near side. Any thoughts?
