I have just had my timing belt (including tensioner etc) and alternator belt changed at my local garage. However after leaving the garage and returning home I noticed my engine making a whining noise when I accelerate or blip the throttle. It’s more noticeable when coming to a stop or stationary when the car is ticking over. I immediately took the car back to the garage and they said to keep running over the weekend as the belts need to run in and if it’s still making the noise to bring it back. The noise is definnalty coming from the timing belt area and it wasn’t there when I took the car in.
Any ideas what this could be or has anyone had the same problem. I have searched the internet and found some cars with the same fault but no one seems to know how to fix it.
My car is a 2007 S60 T5.
Thanks.

if the cambelt is over tightened they can whine a bit....
i guess he told you to run it for the weekend in the hope it will stretch a bit, then the whine will stop....
not a recomended practice tho......
i wouldnt drive it about much until you know whats wrong as if its something with the cambelt then any failiure will be a dissaster,
have you checked the power steering fluid level,
i expect that was drained or spilt and not topped up while it was all apart,
if the resoviour is low then it can whine,
but whatever the prob is,i would get it checked sooner rather than later...

just to be on the safe side...

It does sound like an over tight belt, does your car have a manually adjusted cambelt tensioner or is it sprung/self tensioned ?

sounds like an over tight belt,
or perhaps the garage sneeked a supercharger in there :D

Looking at Autodata it is a sprung tensioner that is manually adjusted, this being the case it may be running a little tight. These type of tensioners can be a sod to set correctly, you rotate them with an allen key until a pointer swings to a certain position, then you have to lock off the tensioner without it altering. Then turn the engine over by hand (the pointer will swing around with the compression spikes) and return it to TDC then check and adjust. They can be a pain to get right as they as the tension can alter as you set it up so often they get set slightly tight as this is a better then slightly slack. If your not happy ask the garage to re-check it.

Well.............I phoned up to check on the car at 14:00 and was told it had not been looked at yet as there was no ramp free. So much for "I will get someone to look at it first thing". But they said some one will look at it straight away.
I went to collect the car at 16:15 and surprise surprise the car was parked in the same frustrated and abandoned way across two bays - the same way I left it 24 hours ago!! They told me that it had been stripped down and nothing was wrong with it. I took the keys and left.
The noise is still there although not as loud. But the car is idling slightly lower than normal and a bit of a “dur dur dur” lol sound as the revs settle. Taking the car into Volvo on Wednesday, they are going to check it over and are only going to charge me half an hours labour - £58.
