View Full Version : 850 R OBDII not reading?

Just had some local mechanics look at my car in preparation for it going to a Volvo specialist next week.

They plugged their OBDII diagnostics meter in and it came back 'could not connect'. He took the car to another garage with a better reader and it came back the same........any ideas why it could not connect?

He also drove it and said the turbo appears to be coming in late (with no prompting from me) and said it certainly did not feel like a chipped turbocharged car........

Thoughts appreciated.

Normally a worn turbo would spool up as normal but not hold the boost at higher rpm. What you are describing is like a big turbo symtom goes well from high rpm but not low rpm. Im not sure what to suggest as I say she pulled well in the mid range 2400-5500 ish when I last gave her beans and she defo boosted a lot higher than either of my stock 854s.
Regarding the OB2 Im not sure Ive heard it common that they dont work on 850s have u tried the fault code reader yet or is still stuck in the glove box.

I wish I could be of more help, if it makes u feel any better ive lost 50 BHP on my newish V50 over stock according to a dyno run :(

It seems me and you are running out of luck with performance Volvo's :( !

850's are full OBDII, they are a mixture between OBDII & Volvo's own language so needs to have the special software to read the codes. You could try the simple LED reader

ok - it's back on the drive until it gets looked at by a volvo specialist......just drove it back from cheltenham (20 miles) and under low speed (40mph/50mph) foot to the floor in 4th/5th there is a rumbling sound with no power. On hard acceleration in 1st/2nd, there is a clunk (thud from under car) when changing gear. It is really hot, even the radiator plastic cover and i averaged on the way home 32mpg so no flooring, apart from that initial 1st/2nd when i noticed the thud.

The tyre mechanics said the gearbox sounded noisy but I'll take that with a pinch of salt until it's confirmed.

Should be slow picking up from 50 in 5th as under 2k but lively in 4 th, dont know about heat it never over heated on me always stayed in the middle of the gauge but I never drove weather as warm as today not that should effect it. I thought the LSD box was a bit more noisey than the normal t5 box and there is a recipt for it being replaced. I had nt noticed any thuds after I had the wishbones bottom arms and engine mounts etc replaced.
I hope everything works out for the best with her at the independents.

At 55mph it is doing about 2,250 revs. It is rough in 5th at this speed when flooring - no power at all. Drop to 4th and it is much the same. Seems to only pick up when above 3,500.

Yes it was hot today and has cooled down now - only thing I have changed is I have removed the dump valve and replaced the boost hoses....maybe one of the hoses is not on properly? It does judder a bit with a slight flat spot (I think).

What does the middle of the BCS do? It goes to the air intake and i managed to split it slightly when getting annoyed.......may need a new air intake if it affects anything?

i have seen the receipt too - as i say, not gonna take the advice off tyre changers tbh and will wait for a more pronounced diagnosis.

well...update.....just took my 18st mate for a thrash in it to show him....he thinks there's nothing wrong with it! I caned the arse off it, hit 100mph in no time, and it flew.....but then it does when you mash the arse off it......starting to think it's just me and i am expecting M5 performance......?

with no knocks on gear changes, no flat spots, but i just had to keep the revs around 3,500 upwards.......the exhaust gasses were hot after......

Giles I bet you would still beat me mate up the strip!, ive just recorded my 0-60 as stock and its slow 8.2 and 8.4 :(. My mid range isnt bad but unrecorded! I reckon your missing the 15g and kick down of your autos! I bet 3rd is nice and quick from 50 though.

It sounds like you have the top end power I have the bottom end I guess if we had a twin engined T5 we would be totally satisfied

Thats seems poor, my mates standard s40t4 auto, would do it in 7.
I know that the official time for the auto is nearly 8 and we've had people say it before, but we timed it a couple of times and always managed about 7 and it would stay with a friends manual e36 328i coupe up to 40mph and then pull away easily.

I did have one enounter with a s40 t5 in my last t4 and gave it a thrashing, but just assumed it was a combination of mine being mapped and him being a crap driver.

Keep the revs up and it flies......just missing the low down torque......i dont understand....back from cheltenham it seemed slow....when i took my mate out....it flew! Chirping of front wheels but no wheelspin round roundabouts at 70mph like my auto used to do in 2nd......not yet anyway ;)

Feel for your car.....my diesel does it in about 8 ;)

Just another thought......it only boosted just into the white......rarely did it get halfway into the white.......what would cause this?

Could overtightening the actuator rod do this? It was about halway and i did it half a turn more but still showed as about half way into the hole.......

lance
Thursday 24th March 2011, 10:33
Not sure about the actuator but it was 4/5th - 5/6 into the white on full throttle foot to the floor at peak boost, and the lsd is designed to reduce wheel spin.

hmmm......just got off phone to smithy.......could be BCS or actuator but deffo only just into the white now....occasionally it goes halfway, but rarely.....he have given me some tips to try ;)

Cheers Si - but i bought one this afternnon - forge unos off ebay for £70 !!! Hopefully come tomorrow/saturday......i will probably need guidance fitting it tho and I still aint tried smithy's suggestion yet although i did spray a fine mist of water around all the vacuum hoses and nothing happened......i either have a knackered BCS or actuator

Forge Unos ones? I was tempted by the £14 ones then read how a ££ item can cause ££££ of damage so thought it was not worth it and opted for the better make.

1- we could use to test psi

2- the end of the white on your boost gauge on the dash is 15psi...

hmm.....in my experience, my white auto (ss 1/4 mile 14.221 @ 97mph) beat ALL other volvo's (850's and V70's) back in 2004. Wobbly dave was impressed and gutted as his R was no match ;) - he drove it and said it felt 'chippy'.

So, think your auto will be on a par (when mine's fixed!) tbh - there is hardly anything in them and from a start, the auto's have the edge IMO

But yes, be good to meet up :)
