Just in case anyone hasn't seen this car, have a look in the garage, its looking excellent and johnnytempest you should start a thread of what you are doing, its really looking good now and sounds like you'll be having some fun in it and maybe there are a few people unaware of what you are doing.

I wasn't sure it would go down very well as its not a perfect btcc rep.
I have to follow certain regs in the race series,so although from a distance its might look it,close up,quite different.
I still have a long way to go to get anywhere near the sharp end, I'm down by about 120BHP for a start and with the cut out problem I have, lots to do.

Be great to see some support at the races, I have ordered a couple of VPCUK for the car too, maybe get some new interest?? lol.

I have loads of pictures of different stages of build, so if people want to see it, I'll see if I can upload them with some sort of descriptions.

And thanks to this forum, a great place to talk anything Volvo.

thanks to P Fandango and Al115 for their recent help too.

Doesn't have to be a perfect replica mate, your doing a good job with it, looks like its being done well.

Will there be any races nearer the midlands, brands is is a long way from leicester. If a few of us went, it may be worth it.

Yea i could have the best pit crew going!! shame there are no pitstops. lol
I have been following this race series around for 2 years now and the only time I have needed to buy a pass was when they supported the DTM.
So yes,open paddock
and yes burger van!

I'm not 100% in for the Brands race just yet, so please dont book anything, just incase. i'll keep you up to date.

I would think Donnington would be closest to Leicester.
The next meeting is there, but I unfortunatly, wont be racing.

Ok, here goes, I'll do my best...

Been following some friends around on the Project 8 Racing Saloons for two years. Done a few track days in my 911 and got the bug and decided I wanted to join my mates on the race track.

It's a pre '94 series, my mates race Sierra Cosworths which I didn't fancy. The other obvious choice are the BMW M3/M5's but there are plenty of those already in the series, so I started to look for something different.

Googling BTCC reminded me of going to Brands Hatch and watching the touring cars back in the early 90's and gave me a few ideas. First idea was a Vauxhall Cavalier, which I soon discovered didn't have much to give in the way of extra performance. Second idea was the Volvo...

JT
Saturday 26th March 2011, 19:48
Having looked into it, the performance gains on the 850 are massive and having followed the BTCC around in the early 90's and supporting the Volvo's, that's what I've decided to race.

So this was the car I bought:

Next step...having the roll cage put in.

http://i54.tinypic.com/2cgd3dy.jpg

The roll cage was done by Rob at RAW Motorsport, who was recommended by the two cossie drivers. Rob is also racing in the same series in a BMW M5.

Aiming for the original touring car design I decided to get it painted white as a base colour

http://i54.tinypic.com/24wdcn4.jpg

http://i53.tinypic.com/2zfn500.jpg

Whilst that was being done I decided to spray some bits of trim and bumper etc that I had sitting in the garage...

http://i52.tinypic.com/24655c4.jpg

The first job after the body shop was to fit the front bumper, headlights and towing eye whilst I was at it:

JT
Saturday 26th March 2011, 21:17
Next was building the dash

As the car doesn't have to be road legal I decided to simplifly the dash and only keep the necessary switches for racing

http://i53.tinypic.com/16lwyaf.jpg

The seat was welded into place whilst the car was being painted and I fitted the fire extinguisher once I had the car back in the garage

Regulations for the series state that you can only run brakes that are big enough to fit under the original wheels for the car so I found these on fleabay...

http://i52.tinypic.com/f9jns6.jpg

I believe they are the optional extra 17" wheels for the 850 but they had been hand painted by the previous owner so I had them resprayed to their original glory and had the race tyres fitted

Next I fitted the 3" exhaust from JT tuning (which is quite nice as it has my initials on it :D) , MT brake discs and EBC 'Yellowstuff' pads. I also fitted my new K&N induction kit. At this point I was still waiting on the suspension to arrive in preperation for a track day at Snetterton.

http://i55.tinypic.com/2yw91uh.jpg

I was then told that I wouldn't get the suspension until the morning I was due to be at Snetterton...

JT
Saturday 26th March 2011, 22:06
I got the suspension at the track on the morning of the trackday and started to fit it with the help of one of my friends in the cosworth's. It took all morning but we got there in the end...

Then during the afternoon sessions I got some laps out on track

http://i55.tinypic.com/1zgw6ls.jpg

(I would put up a better picture but my nephew got told off for taking pictures from the pit wall, so this is the only one we have)

Onboard footage which you may have seen already - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMUdJEIACv8

JT
Saturday 26th March 2011, 22:29
Between bolting on the suspension and the end of the day I managed to make good progress on lap times by adjusting the ride height, camber and dampening settings. Considering its the cars (and my) first run a 3.02 lap to a 2.36 lap is a good improvement, but considering the engine is completely standard shows it has a lot more to give.

JT
Saturday 26th March 2011, 23:02
The next step was to make the car comply with the race regulations, e.g electrical shutoffs etc. as well as moving some weight around i.e. moving the battery

http://i51.tinypic.com/23ibamw.jpg

http://i54.tinypic.com/dea1pz.jpg

Removing the original battery allowed me to run two hoses from one of the grilles in the bumper up to the air filter to provide it with as much cold air as possible

sorry mate,
I was just reading back through the thread with the thought of updating this tomorrow, when i spotted your questions??

as for road legal..........no expert but:

no screen wash jets or bottle
no number plates
no number plate lights
no cat
no side lights
no full beam
no horn
no airbags( not sure on that 1?)

these are a few i can think of.........lol

and weight, well to comply with the damn regs, I am allowed to run the car at its original kerb weight(as per carfoilio.com) which is 1450Kg, with myself in all my race gear, minus 5%.

to clear that up... the car and me in race trim=1375KG.

I can go lighter and add ballast etc, but at this stage, just keen to get out there and see whats what.

need a chat with you about a single wiper
i'm desperate for one to give it that touring car look and the reduced drag will benefit also.

I tried using the rear wiper mech of an estate but it goes too far round, a true 180, so now i have pretty much tried everything with all the bits i have, but still cant get it from side to side without going off the screen or not going far enough, very frustrating

just glad i traced it back to the right wire lol

i wasn't going to post about this until it was totally finished & on BT, put after a trial run & seeing that it works as planned with only a few minor problems to fix i thought why not.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9380/dsc00781dl9.jpg
the single wiper in the park position, altho once i get the straight arm i think i'm going to have it parking up the screen (BTCC style)

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/7937/dsc00782jp2.jpg
this is the maximum sweep of the arm, as you can see it doesn't miss much of the screen & even surprised me how much area it covers

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/1619/dsc00784iw3.jpg
standard mechanism on top & the modified one underneath, i cut off the drivers side spindle housing to save weight but had to leave the rest of the unused arm because its unstable with just the one mounting point

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9269/dsc00788hi3.jpg
the technical bit, only original parts off 1 mechanism have been used (just cut & welded to fit differently)

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/438/dsc00793yl0.jpg
standard spindle with the un-used arm took off just so you can see everything

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2349/dsc00794ec1.jpg
the modified spindle with the drivers wiper arm ball joint cut out & the used passenger ball joint welded back on the correct distance from the pivot point to give the full sweep

the only reason its not staying on is because the standard volvo wiper blades kink up away from the skuttle panel & hits the bonnet when it sweeps right across to the drivers side. Not sure what blade will do but i'm going to try a Fiat Uno one to see

JT
Thursday 31st March 2011, 22:22

no problem sir

its been a few years since i did the conversion, but i'm sure you need the multi-link mechanism on the actual spindle that the wiper arm bolts too to go to its full limit while the motor spindle is pointing towards the mechanism as in pic 3

lol its no problem sir, just keep us posted on progress

you say you might tweek the wiper a bit, what you got lined up?

well as you can see,the wiper bounces off the driver side a bit, so a bit of adjustment there.
also the switch I put in on my dash, stops the wiper where I turn it off.
So I need to figure out the other connections, so that it returns to centre point after I've turned it off.

And I think ,as you have discovered before, it need a straight arm to make everything sweet.

Will cause the turbo to overheat!

There no air around there to cool it, why was it suggested?

Tomcat
Sunday 3rd April 2011, 21:44
Exactly, what was the point of removing the water cooling from the turbo?, all that's going to do is cause it to over heat and seize up, there's no benefit from removing it.

the waters getting hot for a reason, because its cooling the turbo lol.

if their worried about the water getting too hot wouldn't it be an idea they invest in a better radiator

Could the brake fluid reservoire be moved? It can't be helping the fluid temps being sat above the turbo.

I think you are going to have an issue where ever you put the reservoir as the lines are copper and conduct heat very well. Best thing in all instances is racing brake fluid with an extremely high temperature resistance, failing that 5.1 is miles better than 4.

That is an excellent vid. Brakes must be a huge issue. But keep it nice and steady and get the feel of it for now - cause nothing offends like a seriously bent car: of which there were MANY today at the Hatch - I think the pace car achieved a new mileage record, and interestingly enough the one big race of BMW 3 series (39 starters) left enough wreckage to put a smile on Duane's lovely mug ;)

16t actuator is harder than a 15g, & depending on the wallet you want a 16t with the angled outlet. It will mean changing the downpipe as well but will be 3" instead of the straights 2.5" (even quicker spool)

i assume as you've got an early T-5 you've already got the RIP kit (reverse intercooler pipes)

Monday 6th June 2011, 08:07
Regarding Brakes, if you haven't already purchased a set of AP's there is a link on here to a setup using Volvo 336mm XC90 discs and VW calipers that will fit under your Titan wheels. All for under £150 fitted. You then need to buy some Carbotech XP8 or XP10 pads or a combo of both front to back as it seems like purpose built track car. With using the VW calipers there are lots more pad options available. Hawk HPS pads, Carbone lorraine pads but steer away from EBC as they tend to be very poor on track from many forum users opinions. I'd personally stick with genuine OE spec Volvo discs from Volvo if you go the 336mm route or stay with 302mm. The 336mm disc option mentioned is a massive increase in stopping power even with standard discs.

So if he ran an R could do a 16t? I think I might just accidentally put an 18t on in all innocence! Unsporting I know, but it does not sound like the scrutineers are looking too closely so I presume everyone is doing it - what a shocking assumption!

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/26032011309-1.jpg
robbed from his Photobucket account, altho not that recent as he's got 2 wipers lol

looks like you need to speak to Powerflex, top mount, tie-bar bushes (big & small) & have you done your wishbone bushes? & if you've got money to spare an MSD coil. Now you know the ABS is naff you could remove it & save some weight

So if he ran an R could do a 16t? I think I might just accidentally put an 18t on in all innocence! Unsporting I know, but it does not sound like the scrutineers are looking too closely so I presume everyone is doing it - what a shocking assumption!
its got to be pre-1994 so can't use an R. We all know things are getting advertised wrong on ebay, sure i seen someone sell a 19t advertised as a 15g

Alan M

He could just machine the 15g compressor housing to accept a larger compressor wheel and still keep the 15g Nameplate.

JT
Monday 6th June 2011, 20:46
16t actuator is harder than a 15g, & depending on the wallet you want a 16t with the angled outlet. It will mean changing the downpipe as well but will be 3" instead of the straights 2.5" (even quicker spool)

i assume as you've got an early T-5 you've already got the RIP kit (reverse intercooler pipes)

I have a 3" downpipe, but I'm guessing your talking about the oulet of the turbo being 3"??

and yes RIP already done.

Have you got a recent under-bonnet photo? Why aren't you running an 18t. Thought the guys would be interested in the regs - and it seems to have paid off ;)
Why not run an 18t?

cheers Phil, working brilliantly!! lol

I could probrably get away with an 18T,cos its a stock item, but I can only run 1.3 bar of boost,so all i would gain would be some efficiency.

not sure if it'll be any use as your caged up, but you can get chassis braces for the 850 LINK (http://www.automac.co.uk/product/UR-LA4%20357)

you need the angled turbo exhaust housing off an ME7 16t/19t, remove the straight housing off your turbo (which you can do while you fit your S60R manifold) & the new angled housing replaces it with no mods

if you've already got a 3" downpipe a decent exhaust manufacture (Powerflow, Longlife, Custom Chrome) should be able to adapt your current one. Its only cutting the angle different & weld on the 3" flange, assuming they didn't do the bend in 2.5" on your current pipe

I know it is probably a daft question, but have you had the car laser aligned since having the ARBs fitted? It is absolutely vital - and in the period before and after I had IPD ARB fitted, and the alignment done, the car was all over the shop. HOWEVER, wait to get the polybushes on before you have this done (actually should not alter the angles - but if there is slack in the existing ones that you later replace, this will affect the alignment) as it is a bit pricey to have done properly: Truckalign or similar. Same goes for any other bush swapping on the suspension. What damping and springing you got there?
And how do you find the Toyos? Although I only have 215/40/17 Vredesteins, they are a very 'narrow' 215, and also very rigid. I think going too wide allows too much sidewall flex.

If you can put up with increased vibration through the cabin you can replace lots of flexible rubber bushes at the front for firmer items. The subframe bushes can be replaced for Delrin bushes, so can the upper engine mounts and tie box mount. These are good upgrades over standard if your on track a lot which it seems you are. You can buy a later model angled downpie from the States off ebay for around £140 then have an inter mediate section made up between the downpipe and cat back with either a cat or straight through section depending on the series regulations. Buying this complete exhaust system would work out cheaper after import taxes than the JT downpipe and you could sell the complete system on as your only after one of the downpipes that come with it http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-TURBO-BACK-TURBOBACK-EXHAUST-VOLVO-850-C70-V70-S70-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3368706ff2QQitemZ22079 5531250QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries

we think the springs are too strong so the dampers are not doing their job, topped off with an IPD ARB,the front is pretty stiff.

gonna try and soften everything up

The angled downpipes from those kits come up on the forums at times for around £120 but you will need to remove or alter the crash guard between the downpipe and steering rack for them to fit clear without rubbing. If you do buy an exhaust you can resell it on ebay over here to cover a lot of the price you paid if not the full amount you need back.

from underneath the car find the 2 pipes from the PAS pump, they are bolted to the subframe & be under the airbox sort of area. One of the pipes is a low pressure return pipe & should be connected with a simple jubilee clip, thats the lowest point in the system so best to drain it from there. The system is fully independant & a very simple system, all you've got is the pump, tank, 2 pipes (high pressure & low pressure return) & the steering rack. If it is playing up you better just replacing the whole pump & tank assembly

it is a heavy duty battery i'm using at the minute but will get a smaller battery eventually, probably still be a wet one because i want to remove to try running without the alternator & want to make sure theirs always enough power to get her started

anyway, back to the steering, I'm assuming I need to drain and top up at the same time so I dont get an airlock in the system?
as its a pump with return feed it should bleed the air back to the tank itself. Drain it, fill it back up & turn the steering lock side to side a few times
