I spoke to the machine shop about the tabs as mine didnt have them even the original shells that came from my engine didnt have them from the factory they said most manufacturers were now using shells with no tabs

I would say that if the rods have slots, you should use tabs, if the rods don't have slots, then no tabs.

The rods which I just sold had the tab recess, I was told the shells are a minefield to get the correct one.

In theory thats correct but genuine volvo rods have cut backs but still use shells with no tabs it seem a cross over point for volvo where they were using shells with no tabs but there rods still had the slots.

If they have no tabs then how do they not spin and block off the oil access to the bearing? Cant just be relying on friction to keep them in place.

Thats what kost manufacturers are relying on tc it must work I honnestly think the people aho are having trouble are either using worn or wrong size shells just look at the ammount of engines running these shells with no problems they also came this way from the factory

Bad times JT, as previously suggested it's probably a bearing fault. Incidentally which rod bearings were affected? For the record a number of the aftermarket rods available have no locating tabs..

These are my genuine Volvo shells that were fitted to my engine from the factory and as you can see theres no tabs there just a smooth shell.

Jt I would recommend taking your rods and crank to a machine shop and let them match the shells for you I didn't purchase my shells through Volvo the machine shop got me all the shells pistons etc that I needed and obviously made sure my crank wasn't worn.
Just saying that have you had your crank inspected for wear?

The shells locate like any other bearing that you don't want the outer (or inner) to turn, they require an exact, press or interference fit etc. The tabs are just to locate the bearing on assembly they will not stop a bearing from turning/moving if they are incorrectly sized.

Were the internal diameters of the big ends of all the rods checked before assembly?

My K1 Tech rods did not have a rod big end journal recess. Shells AFAIK didn't have any corrsponding lugs. I am now wondering if I have chosen the wrong rods?

I am going to ensure that my shells are exactly matched. I did wonder when I removed them that the shells were a bit loose inside rod big ends.

They don't require a recess, if you get the correct size shells to ensure the bearing crush is within the manufacturers specification they will not move. Or sometime the rods need machining to get the correct crush.
Who measured the big ends & spec'd the shells?

The engine was assembled at the bottom end of 2012 by a Shropshire based firm. TBH I don't think we'll be reusing any of them - particularly as the crank journal on #2 was ruined. I can't assume that the crank replacing it will be the same. I am using a different firm for this assembly though.

small update
and as usual, its good news bad news! lol

I have decided to go back to a standard engine, as I'm told it will be fine up to 1.2 bar of boost and with the lower ratio box, shouldn't produce enough torque to do any damage. Time will tell.

so went on a bit of a road trip yesterday:)

first stop C&G Motor factors, AKA Merc85.
dropped off a fuel rail and picked up 2 drive shafts, been meaning to replace mine since the accident at Avon.

From Merc to Nealevo, to pick up and engine. this standard engine will go in the race car.

from Nealevo up to Coventry, to drop off a cylinder for graemewelch to JamesT5R, only to be given a turbo to bring back for Boostwagon!!
The VPCUK courier service in full swing! lol

Met James and Pedro for a nice chat over a cool beer:)

Back to Pedros to drop off bits for him and pick up a bumper for me.

then head home.

pleasure meeting everyone again:)

so I get home after nearly 500 miles and 120quids worth of diesel! but A good day...........

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0870_zpsb3ca1dc5.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0870_zpsb3ca1dc5.jpg.html)

then comes the bad bit..........

woke up this morning to this:

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0871_zps21eb16a2.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0871_zps21eb16a2.jpg.html)

hoping it wasn't the van, I opened the back doors to find

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0872_zps1a6b98fd.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0872_zps1a6b98fd.jpg.html)

so I started to get the engine and bits out of the van to reveal the full leakage
it was everywhere!

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0873_zpsefcc9512.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0873_zpsefcc9512.jpg.html)

so after a 4 hour clean up operation, wondering why the leak had happened in the first place, I remembered a certain person removed the dipstick and tube for his own project, leaving it open! oh dear! lol
why there was that much oil in there anyway, I don't know, but nevermind.

anyway, I had a quick play with the bumper.
I like the look of the V70R bumper, so wondered if it would fit the 850

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0875_zps332af165.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0875_zps332af165.jpg.html)

not quite, but a bit of modification here and there and I think that could look good, especially with a TC splitter on it:)

this bumper is to go back, so If anyone hears of 1 available, give me a shout.

cheers JT

If the aux oil cooler is mounted with the pipe work at the top then no you wont get all the oil out.

But if you mount it with the pipe work at the bottom then when you drain the oil out of the engine it will drain out of the oil cooler

( as long as the oil is hot otherwise the thermostat on the oil feed to the oil cooler from the engine will be closed )

I think the good book of lies, reckons nearly 2 litres of oil stays in the system on a service

only when you take it apart, do you get the rest of it.

What's the story behind the engine? Did you hear it running before you bought it/did it come from a source well known to you? Just because it's been ported doesn't necessarily mean you need to worry of course ;)

well, the car lives to fight another day:)

made it to Brands yesterday, but the conditions were awful !
the car on the other hand was behaving very well, we didn't have to get any tools out or even top up the fluids!! lol

I noise tested first, 102db limit...............I checked in at 100db, that was close!
followed by some very nervous sighting laps, bear in mind I was on R888's!,checking all temps and trying to get the power down to check boost levels.
all seemed well at this point.

4 runs followed........vids to follow

overall, a good day I thought.
Oil temps are much lower than when we did Trax, so the oil cooler is working well:)

good to see Judge and some other Volvo nutters there too. thanks for coming down:)

the car got the usual attention and I got the usual question......."is it a real touring car?" lol

big thanks to Sam for his help.

I think I need another RR session, to get the fueling sorted out, its a bit rich at the mo
then try a dry day.

maybe just maybe, I could be racing again next year:)

A bit more Rolling Road action today:)

needed to gain control of the boost levels, done by releasing all the preload on the actuator and changing the spring in the recirc valve
and tweek the fuel map,she was a bit rich.

So have gone from 1.5 bar to 1.27 bar of boost (1.3 is the max allowed in my race series)
but with a flick of a switch,1.4 bar:)

running a standard engine now, so 1.2 is really all I need.

I was given a few hours of "me" time today, so the question was:

A - wash the van
B - go and fettle with the race car

so off to the garage I went:)

A few small jobs, that needed doing:
adjust the handbrake, after nearly seeing the car roll off the trailer all by itself on Friday! :shockedbi
replace headlight protection, rather than use tape across them, I use an industrial type cling film, works a treat :)
Swapped the front 10mm universal fit spacers with 15mm hub centric ones.

then the big job........rear suspension set up???
the back of the car is very bouncy? If you push down on it and release it just keeps bouncing up and down!
so, off came the springs (520lbs) and were swapped for 450lbs,I then wound up the shocks to full hard, result.......no better:(

wound the shocks all the way soft (some 46 clicks later) and tried again, worse than ever
But when I tried the shocks 15 clicks from soft, some amount of success, its not as firm as the front, but maybe that's good?
I'll find out next Sunday, back to Brands we go again:)

But I have a question.........
while under the car I noticed my Delta link bushes are shot to bits!
obviously I would like uprated versions, but they are expensive, so I thought maybe even swapping them for new standard ones would be better?
If I can find them??? anyone???
and a quick search makes me think they are not easy to change either??? anyone had to change theirs???

cheers

I've got a similar issue on my 850 when the dampers are cranked up to fullhard the car bounces around like a jelly fresh out of the mold. Like you I kept the front hard & softens the rear by about 30%. It's better but not ideal.

Can't speak for your set up by I know my shocks need a refurb (gaz gold coilovers with 20k on them) which should sort out the bump/reboundsl issue. Perhaps look at changing the shocks for newer units & see if that helps?

nice thread btw, enjoyed flicking through it

similar set up, stiffer front, softer rears :)

I'd love a set of KWs

update................

where to start?

A weekend at Donington Park:)
What a track!! so nice to drive a track I've not been to before.

arrived about 9:30 Friday morning, straight into driver briefing,20 minutes later, out on track!
Friday was a trackday, giving me a chance to learn the circuit which proved to be invaluable.
The weather was a big part this weekend, wet to dry to wet to dry..........

overall very pleased with Friday, a few 'offs' and many lock ups as I got used to the new pads :)

Raceday:

Woke up to find it raining again:(

set up camp at the track and waited for ( pedro to stop fitting go-pros to my car! lol ) qually.......a nervous moment as I had not raced in the wet before, but would Fridays practice pay off???

Lets hope the Go-Pros worked?
I know they didn't for the first race, as I forgot to press the magic button:(
but my camera, worked for once, so once we have sorted out who has what footage, there should be some vids up soon.

A massive thanks again to Sam, who so far this weekend has had about 6 hours sleep! I couldn't do it without you mate :B_thumb:
and to Pedro,Jamest5r and Nealevo for coming along not only to watch, but the guys also got their hands dirty too when I needed it most!
