Its probably harder to tell on NA engines when they have small mods.

Wouldn't surprise me if they had a few alpina type tricks on them i.e different crank, mahle pistons, etc.

and the old 325s are probably 327s. (325/525E[2.7] block with the 2.5 head)

I know plenty of theoretical stuff about them, my dad had a modded e28 525e and then an e32 735 with a few bits done to it, but its mostly just what my mates at my bmw independent have told me. Its them that you'd want with you, what they don't know about bmws aint worth knowing.

that a good torque figuire mate i bet it flys now aslong as that is ibft of course.i do like this car though.i had similar figuires in my 940 at 4200rpm though because i was maxing the maf out hitting boost cut at under 17 psi.that was 265whp and 450nm torque .

I have made the decision to pull out of the silverstone meeting.
Even though I put my name down pretty early, there are sooooo many people
wanting to do it, I am down as "reserve no:5"!! :(

Basically, I am to turn up,qualify and be ready in the holding area for the races just incase 5 cars drop out...................I dont think so.

I was in 2 minds about doing this anyway, what with the baby due anytime soon,so this made my mind up really.

next race I'm looking at doing for Project 8 is Snett 300 on the 30th of July, which is a long way away,so might have to look again at other series or do some some trackdays instead if anyone is up for that?

JT
Monday 4th June 2012, 16:06
well its been a while and had to go to page 3 of the project section to find my thread, I thought it was time for some sort of update:)

well after the first race at Brands, the marshalls were pointing out I had "oily smoke" when I lifted off the power?? I was told it was the oil seals in the turbo.
sent the turbo off and there were no problems to report except metal swarf found in the oil entry!! not good.
so new rad/oil cooler
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0253.jpg
and new oil lines
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0317.jpg
and obviously an oil change and filter.

but then I had a thought the smoke could have been coming out of my PTC,which is now redundant. so a catch tank has been fitted
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0318.jpg

hopefully thats the end of the smoke???

Had new camber plates delivered to reduce the 6 degrees I was running, but the same things turned up,so with the help of T5 Stealth, I had them machined to half their standard size,in theory, reducing the camber by half,to a more sensible 3 degrees.
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0304.jpg
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0307.jpg
so now looks like this:
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0308.jpg

We had some problems getting the boost right. The standard bcs was playing up so one of these has been fitted.
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0313.jpg
switchable from in the car,so to reduce the boost through the slow corners and hopefully get rid of some of the understeer.

fitted a new trip for a bit of protection.
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0319.jpg

I was bored one day and painted the cam cover, I knew this would wind up certain people! lol
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0312.jpg

Also had my second set of Toyos turn up, so had them fitted, ready to go
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0314.jpg

found that my exhaust was burning its way through the rear bumper,so changed the bracket on that
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0305.jpg
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0306.jpg

then yesterday,I did a bit of experimenting............
most of us have short shift, front to rear, so I had a go at the side to side
and I have to say,it works a treat! :)
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0302.jpg

but as always, its not all good news
I went to move the car today and the alternator pretty much burst into flames!!!!!
always something to slow things down

anyway, thats it for an update
cheers

even a Ferrari was struggling!! why oh why he was out there anyway, is beyond me?? lol

http://youtu.be/2WYdUX8v8CA

I am having problems with the catch tank set up.
I have removed the pcv, blanked off the sump entry. camcover and block entries have been tee-ed together and piped into the tank, the other pipe from the tank is just to atmosphere.
I'm getting oil coming out of the catch tank??????

It has been suggested that i use the drain plug to recirc the oil from the catch tank back into the sump which I can do, but I am worried there may some underline problem as to why there is so much pressure at the catch tank, enough to spit the oil back out!?

any ideas anyone??

i always run a catch tank with the orginal black tank separator conected to the engine ,just run the pipe from black plastic tank that would normally run to the inlet pipe straight to the catch tank and then run a pipe under the car to air mate.

well another poor day at the office:(

I went back to Brands again,to try and get some set up work done in the dry this time.
the weather was brill, really hot and perfectly dry.

did a couple of laps to see what the catch tank was up to.
I put a bottle over the end of the vent, making sure not to bung it up completely,so I could see what it was spitting out.
oh dear............
http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0427.jpg

so not a good start to the day.

The decision was made to put the standard PCV and associated pipework and put the vent from that into the catch tank as some others have done on here.
As some of you will know, this was quite a lenghty job and took me till 12:55, then they shut the track for lunch! :slap:

so, having waited for an hour,I went out to see if that had cured it.
got on the main straght and popped a boost hose and had to park on the grass, waiting to be towed back! FFS

Some time later, after I had calmed down..........
finally managed to get some runs in, but not without problems
it would only boost to 1 bar and the brake pedal hit the floor!

So its all going swimmingly..................

Oh I did manage to get my rear facing camera working!! yay!

anyway, here are some laps in the dry,1 bar of boost,an oil leak and no brakes!

with some exspensive traffic to deal with:)

it aint bad,wil keep up with the m3's, if i can split them up, then i loose out in the corners! doh!!

They can't be standard, engine wise then, your car should be as fast if not faster than most m3s up to the e46's.

Are they the quickest cars then?

JT
Monday 20th August 2012, 22:28
some of it is the weight though,
i think they are quite a bit lighter, cant remember exactly
and on saturday, i was 50Kg over, so i had no chance! lol

LiamT4
Monday 20th August 2012, 22:35
Whats your starting weight then?

e30 m3s are 200-235bhp standard (depending on which one they are) and weigh around 1165kg, light but not much power.
e36 m3s are 286 or 321bhp, but weigh around 1460kg.

I doubt if any of them will have over 260lb/ft........when standard.

JT
Monday 20th August 2012, 22:42
the weights are done via carfolio.com

I'm allowed to be 95% of the curbweight including me(which is handy!lol) 1375Kg
I think the M3's may be different, cos they were carrying lead ballast in the passenger seat position, deemed to be unsafe,so they make them run standard cams but 100kg lighter, but dont quote me on that

well Its catch up time:)

as its been over a year since my last update................

Ok, Trax 2012, the car sat in the garage doing nothing, for quite a while
The opportunity to run the GP circuit at Silverstone in 2013( little did I know at the time ), was too good to miss!

So, I brought an engine stand and set to work

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0395_zps97b73242.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0395_zps97b73242.jpg.html)

Fit these in was the first job

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0596_zps9639323c.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0596_zps9639323c.jpg.html)

then start to rebuild,
I fitted a ported head and modified cams and
Painted a couple of bits, tidy things up

put all this back in the race car, to find it wouldn't start. so I take it all back out again and try again.

whilst the engine was out, I was trying to think of a way I could run this engine in, should I get it started
Then someone came up with the question" shame you don't have something road legal you could put the engine in???!!"
what a cracking idea!!! :)

so I put the engine in Black, it still wouldn't start at this point, but it was in....
I went back to standard cams......no joy
I went back to a standard head and standard cams and it started first time:)

I will take a look at the ported head when I get chance, but for now its running and I needed to get some miles on the engine.

500 miles later, at a painfully slow speed, the weekend came to swap it back to the racecar.
I'm getting quite good at this now,4 hours from floor to car and running!!

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0566_zps4630a587.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0566_zps4630a587.jpg.html)

so at this point the idea, was to go to Trax, via a rolling road on the Saturday.
but, the pc would not talk to the ecu:(
Sam spent many hours trying to get it work, and with Adams help, it finally worked at 11:21am Saturday morning, 9 mins before we were due to leave!! phew

load it all up and drive to Dartford.
at this point I'm starting to get really nervous, after all, I've never built an engine before and it was about to be given a shake down..............

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0729_zps8c31b43b.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0729_zps8c31b43b.jpg.html)

well after a few problems and technical hitches, 3 hours later, we finally managed this:

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0737_zps51139a86.jpg (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/johnnytempest/media/IMG_0737_zps51139a86.jpg.html)

its not perfect, but at the time, it will do! lol

I think we all know what happened at Trax, except what actually went wrong, so I wont go into that.

Me either tbh,but I wasn't sure how much of the piston extended into the crank case during rotation. You'd have thought there'd be more clearance than the width of the bearing otherwise surely you're risking severe engine damage (snapped compenents, broken crank case) in the even of a bearing failure?

so can i ask what people think has caused them to go like that. Could it be oil starvation as it was thrown around the corners (oil pick-up then having no oil), a bad bunch of bearings, as i understand it Volvo only do the 1 set of bearings for the conrods so assume they were the right ones.
