as for these wishbone bushes??
they aint gonna fit in there, surely??

Those look right. If they are parts (PFF88-101) they should be correct. Use an Arbour or hydraulic press for easy fitting and they will fit the arms well. They can be a little tight to get into position on the subframe when the new bushes are fitted but they will fit. The tophat ring can split but don't worry as this won affect the bush.

OK. Via Michelin claims 1Hr 43mins using the M6 Toll. So we are looking to leave Cov at about 6.00 am then?

Looks like I might have to talk to Daddy and see if I can stop the night at his in Earl Shilton.

Failing that it's a 4.30 start for me....

he would of been a privateer back in the Volvo days so not really in the same race as them, although i was at Donnington when he won & became the first privateer to win a race outright (the atmosphere was amazing, especially when he stalled during his pitstop & the race got very close). I was a bit disappointed when he became a works driver

ok, losing oil from the front area of the engine

about half a ltr over a 15 minute run?

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/25062011364.jpg

as you can see had all this apart and the only thing i can find is:

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/25062011366.jpg

a girly washer on the bottom of the dipstick tube!
should this just "fall out"?

or is there something else I should look for?

Likely to be the PCV rather than the dipstick, do you still have the PCV in place or are you running a catch tank?, if your running a catch tank then check the lines etc, would be very surprised if the dipstick is leaking.

a very similar entry to the turbo oil return pipe, and that leaked to start with,so I think i might try and seal it in place and cross my fingers

its the 3litre Volvo 960 throttle body you want, getting harder to find now tho. I'd also suggest giving 3" pipes a try for the RIP kit. Might be able to lend you mine to try if we meet up for another race weekend

as Tomcat has already said, was very good to meet up with everyone & put even more faces to names (altho i'll forget them by tomorrow). Got there almost exactly the same time as Tomcat & just caught him parking up as we were walking to the paddock area, had a bit of a hunt to find Johnny between all the BMW's & Ferrari's around the area. Had a good nose around the car then it was time for qualifying. Looked like he was keeping up well with the BMW's, qualified 17th. Race 1 went very well & had a good run & got upto 11th, all looking good till the last corner when we heard he'd lost 2 places. Went back to the pits to see the 850 jacked high on the one side, turns out he had an off on the final bend, lost the places & destroyed the front splitter. Haven't spoke to Johnny about the final race but the car didn't sound happy, sounded like a slight misfire to me & think he lost quite a few places. As said tho it was nice meeting everyone, lovely day & had a good laugh during it as well

no it defo weren't the limiter, it was when you were on throttle going up the hill after the chicane. I think it was a little miss fire, pointed it out to Blackdog & he said it sounded a bit flat

Ooooh no practice on Combe...very interesting indeed lol
Watch out for Avon Rise going into Quarry corner...it's an absolute killer for the unwary! Other than that it's a really nice little circuit.
Seen many people wipe their cars out on Quarry when I used to take my RS there for track days in the 90s.
It's rated as one of the most difficult corners on any circuit in the UK and I agree with that totally, real bast@rd if you get it wrong, which, of course, you won't :)

I think it's a sort of breather for the fuel tank?? that's where the pipe finishes if you follow it underneath.

You should be able to pull the pipe off and slide it down i cant remember how they are fixed as mine has a large cable tie around it :)

Tomcat
Saturday 9th July 2011, 18:29
Isn't it a charcoal cannister to eliminate any petrol fumes from the tank breather?....or something like that..lol.If that's what it is then you could remove the cannister and just put a small K&N type filter on the end of the pipe as your only racing the car.

so that can go too or will it not start??

p fandango
Saturday 9th July 2011, 21:58
so that can go too or will it not start??
mine accidentally fell off

what it does is the carbon canistor saves all the petrol fumes it gets from the petrol tank, then the unit on the fan panel feds these fumes into the engine when you start it. It saves emissions as the fuel vapours aren't released into the atmosphere, & meant to help starting as they are being used as a sort of choke

JT
Sunday 10th July 2011, 10:23

You can make them work. You need to use the existing steel pipework but alter the shape of it after heating the metal to the point where you can bend it to the shape you require. A good engineering shop should be able to do it if you can't. It is easy to do. A good plumber or pipefitter or welder should be able to do it aswell if that is easier. I've done this with a couple of turbos to fit the 850 as the later 16t turbos have the same water outlet/inlet positions on the CHRA.

I forgot to say aswell that if the CHRA has a core with blocked water jacket holes with core plug type blanks they can be removed and tapped to match what you require. The use a blank to block the item no longer needed.

JT

ie in on the top, out on the bottom

or the other way?

No not really as the water is pumped through the jacket by the water pump as it is a sealed casting in the CHRA.

You have the older lower arms which are easier to work with having the removable ball joints. I have just fitted mine which I made from genuine arms after machining them to accept the removable joints.

Are you sure the poly bushes don't fit? Did you remove the steel sleve that is bonded to the bushes on manufacturing? The rubber is made into a steel sleeve when produced then pressed into the arms. Make sure the steel sleeve is removed. Your lower arms are aluminium aren't they? If so you should be able to see if the steel is still there.

Don't use a chisel or hammer on the arm. They are not designed for hard impact because of their material design. Use a junior hacksaw or similar to cut through the metal sleeve then fold out the sleeve with a screwdriver or small pry bar. You have removed the rubber from the sleeve to which it is bonded so you just need to now remove the sleeve. Pressing the bushes out is an easier option for the other arm. I use an arbour press but you can use a hydraulic press aswell.

I did say to 'Tap' it, wasn't recommending going at it with a 12 pound sledge hammer.

Looking at the damage I can only hope that the other guys car is a write off. I have watched the video a number of times and still can't understand why he turned, he should have known that there was a car coming up on his offside, no way could anyone miss that. i'd have a good look round the drivers side shock tower as well incase the crash energy was transmitted thru the strutbrace & damaged both side

JT
Wednesday 27th July 2011, 22:17
i think the strut brace would be bent, as it already isnt straight

the damage would suggest the impact was on the front wheel, but in a rearward direction, hence the broken wishbone and the twisted engine

even so, i'm gonna check everything anyway

AndysR

Good to see your making progress with it so soon after the incident. Must say without the panels on you wouldn't have known it was in an impact from the picture. Fingers crossed you don't uncover any nastys when you rebuild. :)

he was well behind me and watched everything i did he must have know i was turning left just like everyother car does
i didn't bother pointing out it was actually a right turn, but did correct him that it was the first time on the dragstrip so didn't know the Civic was going to cut across. Others pointed out it doesn't matter as the Volvo had right of way. He's gone rather quiet now, except for asking for a new shell

If he does go back on the strip I hope someone will give him a few tips on what not to do. The trouble is that he was the cause of an avoidable accident which is costing a lot to put right.

The Civic "Driver" from his comment doesn't know the first thing about terminal volocity or slowing down from a run. If your car had been turned at the speed it was going, there was a good chance it would have rolled, not being there to see it, I can't say, but it was shifting as it went past.

And why, oh why did he think that he could turn right there ?

he claimed he checked his mirrors twice, he looked just before he was about to turn & the Volvo was just crossing the finish line. As you can see from the video the first turn off is still a fair distance from the finish so no way he could of closed the gap that quick, the Civic would of cleared the lane easily if the Volvo was that far back. Either way he should of waited for the lane to be clear

And why, oh why did he think that he could turn right there ?
thats the first exit turn, the road then leads back to the pits car park. They used to park the fire tender closer to the track so it was easier to see the turn off, but it almost got hit last week after a car hit the wall & span towards it so moved it further away. The second exit which Sam was going for is further down

Yep I know that, but if he'd looked back and did not see the car in the lane next to him, and it hadn't passed him, then common sense says that there's a car coming up to my right and I should carry on down to the next exit, just like all the other runners do.

Sam was doing the right thing and not trying to turn to soon, unlike the excuse for a Civic "driver" who should be banned for one or two meets.

Still no matter what is said, we will always have people who don't think and drive around without a care in the world, I'm just very pleased that Sam wasn't injured, even if he was a bit shaken.

he could of slowed or even stopped on track in his lane, they don't start the next race till the track is 100% clear

as said everyone's alright which is the main thing

LiamT4
Thursday 28th July 2011, 21:09
He's made a simple mistake thats turned into a big mistake.
When your in the outside line you should only turn when you know where the other person is and know what he is doing. If you don't know where he is and what he is doing then slow down and wait untill the other car is along side.

To be honest if that was me racing next to him, then i think a similar thing could have happend as even though thats the exit that i use (i think), he seemed to cut the corner very tight.
Usually the people on that side of the track stay wide and follow it round, because (obviously) theres going to be a car on the inside that will be driving there.

Thursday 28th July 2011, 21:56
Just watched the videos and caught up to speed on what happened. Really gutted what happened and that stupid Civic driver should of gone to specsavers! Everyone knows you dont cross lanes on a drag strip and the outer lane always lets the car from the inner lane clear the track first!

Glad to see you are rebuilding it though. :)

Al115
Friday 29th July 2011, 08:00
Totally. When you're in the outside lane, the drill is that you look-look-look until you know what the other car is up to, else you risk getting t-boned.

Also, if you've just wound the car up to 100mph, a lot of people don't want to stand on their brakes and take the first exit. Especially if they are new to the sport.

Does Civic guy drive like that on the road? I hope not.

Video is really good JT.

Definately need to get the car boosting correctly and as optimum as possible given the race rules. I take it the car can be remapped etc? Modifications such as ported manifolds and turbos surely cannot be uncovered anyhow. The car nevertheless keeps up and sounds the part.

Secretly I am very jealous, I would love to do a track day but dont think I have the driving skill or balls to be completely honest.

Excellent editing too.

It should pull out towards the left... unusual. Perhaps try removing it once the gearbox is free from the engine block as you may have more leaverage, assuming that is that you are removing the box. Failing that give the thing a bloody good smack with a hammer. If you break it and need a spare I have one you can have for free.
