I was just musing as I strolled back to the office; Whats the difference between a V70R and a V70 T5? I guess the question is the same if you compare an 850 T5 and T5-R.

Is it just cosmetic?

Mostly cosmetic and trim levels. 17" rims (usually comets on the V70s). Lowered as standard ~ 35mm. On the 850R the ECU was tweaked a bit to give an extra 15BHP. On the V70R you have the 18T turbo (rather than the 16T on the T5) to give you a bigger top end. The brakes are the same, chassis's the same and exhaust. You get more toys like the sunroof, climate con, 1/2 alcantera seats and the better stereo (3 cd changer up front and 6 cd M/C in the boot). All but the 1998 models were AWD.

weren't the 850R's an insurance group higher than T-5's (not sure if the same goes for the S/V70's)

Standard T5s are Group 16s but the Rs are all Grp17. I also think that the same applies to the GT spec C70s?
