View Full Version : 940 as a track day car?

Thinking of getting a 940 2.3t with the intention of using it for the odd track and drag day from what I've read their easy to tune so power shouldn't be a problem and was planning on gutting the interior to reduce weight sooo...... would it be any good?
Also how much does one of these things weigh roughly out of curiosity?
Any feedback / advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Have a look at smithys 940lpt, he ran a 13.9@1/4mile last year. Not bad considering he's only got 136bhp ;)

Although they are quite big, i don't think that they are that heavy, compared to most new cars.

There deffinatly worth using and can get very good power out of them also the red block engines are extramly strong and take what ever you want to throw at them.
Smithy has a 940 im sure he will help you getting more power out of one.

it would of gone alot faster on the last day of the season if the weather would of been dry 13.9 was too slow but hope to smash that this year .

None lol. Always wanted to do a track day but never really had a car worth taking but now I've got my t5 that I've wanted for ages im a bit reluctant to use it on the track so thought id get a 940 on the cheap and use that :)

I would try the following:

here, (http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/253041/volvo/ebc-yellow-stuff-front-brake-pads/dp4880r.html)here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/toyo-proxes-r888-205-55-16-w-not-road-legal-/130487046215?pt=UK_Cars_Tyres_RL&hash=item1e61a25047#ht_500wt_1156) here (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volvo_C70_2.3_1998/p/car-parts/car-service-parts/regular-service/oil-filter/?501660021&1&e678839ddb4934c2afd0bfbd20f1114d7681af56&OILF) & here (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engine-oil/car-oil-offers/?521771871&0&CC5_277).

£150 for a track day plus <£250 of set up bit's and you will have a real giggle. Once you have done a track day in the T5 your tyres will be scrap, the pads will be good for next time or could be sold for £15-£20 and you will know whether it's worth having a track car.

Unless you can trailer your car everywhere it would need to be taxed, tested and insured - a bit of a PITA. As for the car in question, modified parts are not as common as the usual French or German track warriors so are you getting value?

I would leave the engine standard and work on everything else. Reliability is key and I have seen a lot of builds and mods to stock engines that take along time, cost more than people thought and sometimes doesn't achieve the results expected. Worse still it becomes unreliable and may explode!

You would need to lose the interior, fit one or two buckets, harnesses and a harness bar with a view to fitting a cage pretty early on. The steering wheel may need replacing for something more comfortable.

Outside, wheels or as a minimum tyres would need to be replaced and suspension preferably adjustable will need to be fitted and set up. Although not paramount a LSD would need to be fitted you can't just weld it unless you are aiming to drift only. Brakes you might get away with fitting the 70 series brakes with stock discs and yellow stuff pads then add a bit of ventilation to feed the brakes cold air.

And you are good to go. You will need a helmet and gloves too.

If this is less inspiring you could start with a built road legal track car?

http://pistonheads.com/sales/2528508.htm <steering wheel/seats are wrong and harnesses aren't mounted correctly.
http://pistonheads.com/sales/2437833.htm <needs trailers but I bet it handles ££££ing well!

Good luck.

Here is a golf i've passengered in a few times http://vimeo.com/3878241

Cheers for all the info Murphy :) won't be taking the t5 on the track in case i break it lol
just gonna buy a cheap 940 (really cheap) to play with it will need to be road legal cause a car trailers too heavy for my licence. Not the cheapest option i know. Still it will give me something else to mess about with much to the dismay of the misses lol

When I was at Gatebil I saw how much the Norwegians love them, no reason why not here too!

Few more Volvos on track in this album too.
