Hi all,

Been away for a while, saving money driving a TD Peugeot 306.

I have a theoretical project i am testing the water with.......loved Volvo's, will always have a Volvo, so want one to keep:

Plan:

Source engine and gearbox seperate. Recon gearbox.
Strip engine down, replace with hardened H rods, maybe re-bore, new pistons, skim head, new inlet, new outlet, big turbo, injectors etc plus whatever else it may require?)

Once all done, slap in a manual 850R

Obviously I dunno where to even start so any advice would be of great help, even if it's 'dont bother' lol

I would like to get 400bhp safely (or thereabouts) .......

I am no mechanic but hoping that with engine and gearbox out of car, will be easy to do....? I have a haynes manual and google ;) and of course some great advise on here.....

Thanks,
Giles.

Sounds like a good start, there are plenty of guides around here and you cant go too far wrong when you have the engine out, say goodbye to whatever social life you have tho, my girlfriend hates me even mentioning the volvo haha

You seen my built thread? That should give you a few ideas

I'm aiming for around 400bhp, using forged pistons, H section rods and a GT3071R turbo :D

Will have a look now......how much did it cost? (if it's in the thread, apologies but will look now ;) )

err...most of that was WAY over my head and looked expensive lol.....nice thread tho and great looking car.

Seems i wont need a reconned gearbox after reading that? Seen an engine for about £280 with best offer off ebay so may make an offer of £100 lol......

Would a V70 T5 engine be OK (same as 850?)

I was lucky with the pistons and rods, got them for £500, as for the rest of it.......................... I dare not work it out, the turbo was £1200

If you do one thing, do the rods :)

£500 is good...usually the rods alone are £500.....

I thought about £800 on a turbo (best advice on which to get?) Seen K24 and GT28RS listed a couple of times....the GT28RS may be the better option?

Couple of pointers, that GT30 has a T25 flange, your need to modify the exhaust manifold like I have done, get a T25 flange welded to your exhaust, and if you order from them, find out if they can supply it with metal caged bearings, the GT's come with plastic cages, no idea why.

My turbo came from here, http://www.owendevelopments.co.uk/

hmm.....ok.....think i need to work out exactly what i need and see what's the best option......460bhp would be nice, but my original spec was 400ish so ideally would want a bolt-on replacement (with maybe a modified flange).

400 is my target too, better to have a slightly bigger turbo running under capacity, than a small one running over capacity.
