Hi All,

As soon as the BM goes, im going after an S60 D5 SE Geartronic. My question is, what if any, are the differences apart from the body trim and 163 / 185bhp engines???

Are the Euro 4's the better car and worth spending the extra on?? Im wondering if they uprated the intercoolers and front supsension on the newer cars???

Im leaning towards the Euro 4's in SE or Sport spec if poss

There are loads of differences between Euro 3 and Euro 4.

Here is a small example list of what the Euro 4 has:

1. Diesel Particle Filter to significantly reduce soot levels.
2. Uprated intercooler.
3. Uprated DMF.
4. Different turbo.
5. Worse fuel economy than Euro 3.
6. Superior performance and tuning potential than Euro 3.
7. Different ECU.

Basically the Euro 4 is a better car in every way except fuel economy.

I was looking at the pros and cons of the Volvo S80/S60 163Bhp and 185Bhp a few months ago. After extensive searching through forums (VPCuk, VOC and T5D5), speaking to Volvo, Volvomax and the sales garage, if you have a Volvo D5 (163Bhp), weak points that cause a lot of hassle are the EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve), intercoolers (At around 100k miles), injectors, fuel filters and engine mounts.

If you have the newer D5 engine with 185Bhp, you can also add the swirl pot (Swirl Chamber operating arm failure) and the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) to the list of things to look out for. These two faults can be quite expensive to fix and seem to be quite a common failure.

With insurance costs and reliability in mind, the 163Bhp version is the better of the two to go for (in my opinion). If you want to tune your D5 up and have a bit more cash to play with every month - go for the 185Bhp version.

Best of luck ;)

We just bought the D5 SE 04 model after looking at 02 52s etc so missed this dilema just! Very impressed with the comfort and economy and low down torque, its a million miles better than the newer V50 1.6D courtesy car im running in just about everyway and I prefer it a lot of the time to a T5 or an R!
For aprox £300 163 bhp could soon become 200 bhp and tons more NM if you felt the need!
