Yes, I bought it off Danny

I feel kinda guilty now :( I hope it's not a faulty ecu and I hope there's not much damage done if any.

It's not your fault mate, I don't hold you responsible in the slightest. I'ts more likely I'm asking the ecu to do something it was never designed to do.

The car has been parked at the tuners for the past two months without being looked at, so a couple of days ago I brought it home, it took a while to get it to run on 5 cylinders but eventually sorted itself, but it now looks like the engine is a scrapper (breathing really badly) and on top of that the head gasket is also gone. so I have two choices .
1. sorce a replacement complete engine and chuck that in for this seasons fun
or
2. take the car off the road for a year and go the whole hog onthe engine, (I planed to do up my spare engine over the next 12 months anyway)
as an asside i did manage to have a few blasts up the bypass (before the engine got to hot) and the TurboTuner ecu seems to be working really well on the basic map it has at the moment.

Having had a bit of a think, I'm going to try a bottle of K-Seal in it, if I can get over the head gasket problem temporarily, it will give me a chance to play with the TurboTuner

My worry is, if the car is off the road too long I may loose interest in it. so I'd rather it was running while I build the other engine up

I say keep it running if you can, as you say the car cost you penny's and you have a spare engine your building up so just see what happens :)

AndysR
Tuesday 20th December 2011, 21:15
Bad news about the engine but as you say if you've got a spare engine then what have you got to loose by keeping the existing engine running, and after all experimenting is how we've ended up with such great advancements in technology etc...

nightmare about the engine mate, personally i'd fix the head gasket and run it whist you build your other engine. What turbo do you run btw? I have a garrett gt28 rebuilt with exhaust mainfold and full decat-ed system (looks like jetex or similar) which to be honest was brutally fast when I bought it running the tt,imagine with a SC aswell. You can have the lot for £50 to give your project a bit of a boost :)

Oh and i still have them projectors sat here if you still want them

I wouldnt have thought so Colin.I dont think it would run right mate and with the turbo producing all the pressure you could blow a weld on it.What about some sort of take off from the manifold.

Im affraid I have no idea as to whether it would work, or even if it was a serious question! ;)

However I can say from past experience welds on exhaust housings dont tend to last too long.

It's not a cast hot side, it seems to be mild steel so I dont think there would be a problem welding it.

all exstenal wastgates are taken off the manifold or top of the downpipe and then ever put back into the exhaust or down under the flow but you have to watch for fire.i would still put a smaller exhaust housing on it but thats just me.

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u258/claymore2k/20120128_151427.jpg

there may a solution there... you could machine a spacer to go between the manifold and turbo wide enough to weld the wastgate onto, the downside would be the space between block and bulkhead....

Update on the bonnet:
I wasn't very happy with the quality of the mold (My fault for not stripping the mat paint off the bonnet first) so I decided not to waste the £100 of carbon fibre on it. The bonnet is now done but not very well, still it will do for now. on a plus side I wayed them both, Standard bonnet = 26 kilograms, Fiberglass bonnet = 8 kilograms.
I'll post pics up next week.

EDIT: if anyone wants some C/F let me know, I have a piece 1.5mtrs by 2mtrs.

One of my comets with tyres weighs about 22kg - so effectively this removes another spare tyre - so that's good work.

What's the overall plan competition wise - you looking at hill climbs/ 1/4 miles/ classic racing?

i've got the springs down as weighing 1.6kg, but got the hinges at 4.4kg. My lightened Volvo bonnet i've got down to 14.3kg, so the fibre glass is half the removed weight again

I tell you if this machine does blow up in a cloud of oil smoke and crank case (and I hope it doesn't) - I'd be really interested to see how it does on the strip.

I've got to rub it all down again, as it rained on the wet paint, there's a lot more to do yet, but the finished car should look ok I hope :)

Back to tinkering with the engine today, ever since the new turbo went on, I havent been able to get full boost due to the wastegate actuator, so today I modified a Subaru actuator I had lying around and hey presto back up to 22psi :).

Old Actuator:
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u258/claymore2k/20120507_142546.jpg

New one: and before anyone says anything, yes I know I need a circlip...lol

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u258/claymore2k/20120507_142628.jpg

Whilst investigating the turbo I find it's a Garrett TB2804 off a Nissan Pulsar and not one off a 200sx, so that's a big win :)

my friend you are quite simply.............an inspiration.............and i mean that, hand on heart, you have defined what it is to mod a volvo, its not the normal boring sh..tuff we see everday ,its refreshing, its the unknown, and its different.
ive been so blind sided to owning a white one so i can do the whole btcc lookalike job,but you have just shown with a little imagination and the balls to follow it through, you can go against the grain and come out on top, imho you have just opened a whole new world of ideas for alot of people (me being one :D ) and for that, i applaud sir.
