I want to get my engine rebuilt. I've been told its best to just do the top half of the engine? Is that right? Anybody had it done? How much would I expect to pay?

does the engine smoke?is that you reason for the rebuild

As asked, why does it need one, whats the symptoms?

There's been a oil leak for a while and it seems to be coming from above the turbo. I've eliminated everything else so it comes down to the rear cam seals (which I'm fairly sure the engine has to come out) so I figured its a good time to get the head machined plus new rods, rings etc. Clutch needs a new release bearing too... ...overhaul time I think.

if the rear main crank seal is passing then it can be done by lowering the subframe, the engine can stay in.Im currently rebuilding my 850 R engine, new rings, big ends little ends, oil pump, water pump, timming kit,all gaskets, modified pcv kit, this has cost £700 (all genuine volvo parts)so far to give you an idea.

As mhill has said, rebuilding these engines ain't cheap. When I did mine a few years ago the parts to rebuild the engine and rebuild the turbo set me back around a grand and that was just standard, you could nearly double that it you want to go uprated rods etc.

I should also add that this was about 4 times what i should have paid - best check the price before telling someone to go ahead and do it. And when they start leaving vital components out after doing it....well......hence the 3 times being done......

1st time - car goes in for head skim and complete rebuild as well as 2 (or was that 1) valve being replaced.

2nd time - noisy tappety noise - told to check the coolant and oil in spite of just being done properly......still there so back it went to be 'rectified' by pouring oil into the valve to quieten it down briefly

3rd time - car goes back to find they left a shim out......

You could also do what i did, unbeknown my car was in the thro's of being rebuilt....buy a head for £60, send it to Aston Martin to be completely rebuilt, polished, ported etc for £250..........£310 and rebuilt as new.......£50 on gaskets, oil, coolant.....maybe cambelt......looking at under £500 if you do it yourself......

Contact at aston martin is Nigel White [nwhite13@astonmartin.com]

Hope he doesn't mind me saying.......

Thanks all. I know I've been asking some pretty random questions on here but my plan is to get my car as factory fresh as poss. After looking at the above posts I'm thinking it would be less of a headache to just get a reconditioned engine put in with a 850r clutch and reconditioned turbo. Cheers lads.

I'd love to but my car needs some serious work doing before I'd feel confident, just for reliabilities sake.
