Latest 'exhaustive' malady

The silver hearse has developed a blowing exhaust manifold gasket on no 1 pot. Apprently it's not unusual ("to go out with anyone, tra la la la...") for the manifold bolts to shear off so it's then a head off job.

The words deep and joy spring to mind.

Unfortunatly, as this area gets very hot it can cause problems when removing the manifold. As things heat up the metal expands and then it will cool down and shrink, this will happen many 1000's of times, as you can imagine this can cause problems with bolts, etc, when you add water to the quation, well, you know the rest.
But, this is usually what a garage will tell you in case of a worst case scenario.
With a bit of luck you'll be fine.
