I've just run a brand new V50 1.6D DRIVe for 2000 miles at a steady 80mph... end result, 53.8MPG. I guess that will improve a bit over time, but still, not bad for a big estate car!

Interestingly the infocentre UNDER-estimated the MPG by about 5%.

Thought it might be of interest.

I get slightly less than 53.8mpg :(

I recently drove down ze autobagn cough at a steady 80 mph for 70 miles in the Mrs 02 plate octavia 1.9 TDI and did 52 or 53 mpg, My Audi would probably do about 26 MPG and I guess around 30 MPG for a T5.
I bet when its run in you will get nearer 60 MPG!

What's interesting also is that I've done that exact same route in the V50, an 850 manual, 850 auto, P1 V70 T5, P1 S40 T4, P2 S40 T4, and an S2000. Guess which one gets the WORST economy :D

53mpg is good, but not good enough. For something that is designed to conserve fuel with long gears, low friction tyres, aerodynamic mods, low power/CC and is based on a focus [i.e not that heavy] it should do 50% more IMO.

I read about Bracers new car on 'phat' 18's with sport tyres/suspension...

My new A4 being the latest common rail technology high output 2.0 TDI is staggering. Even during its running in period it will give me 68mpg and had no problem seeing off the GTi / VRX club

What do other eDrive owners get out of their V50's?

When you look it that way I drove back in 2000 a 1986 Merc 190 2.5 5 cylinder normally aspirated diesel over 500 miles mainly cruising @ 70-80 with the odd 85-90 thrown in and some urban work and country lanes around Devon. It was when the Petrol crisis was on and I had a full gerry can in the boot for emergencys I got 50 MPG! The car was nearly run in with around 160k on the clock. In terms of performance the mercs book speed was around 109 mph 0-60 in about 14 secs so I guess not much slower than the latest eco diesels I wonder if they will be as green and last as long?

it is possible to get just shy of 70.0mpg in the DRIVe models, you have to stick between 60/70mph though.

Don't you just trundle along... wishing just wishing....

... you had an epic 5 pot and you could snick it down into 3rd and know you could go to warp speed for the Horizon ? :)

but then you probably don't cry at the Fuel stations either...

yep... achieved 41mpg driving like a nun from Guildford to Sheffield in a Top Gear economy challenge. at one point I was doing 45MPH and really annoying lorries..

Usual is 27mpg when using three figure driving.
I'll hit 33mpg if I drive steady 75-85mph.

I'm wondering what would be the most fuel economic 200bhp car??
