Not wanting to start another debate on what plugs to buy as i know what i use and am happy with them, my question is this:-

How often do spark plugs need changing? (i don't have a service sheet to hand)

Is it x miles or x years??

Thanks all

Surely it depends on the plugs themselves? Some are more resilient than others (eg I have to change the silver ones I run more frequently than if I used Volvo's own).

I'd have thought 20-30,000 miles should be expected. I'm no expert, but as long as they're checked and gapped every service they should be ok.

Id agree with that

I'm running the NGK Platinum at the moment but i think i'll try the Iridium plugs when i get around to visiting VT for a bit of a checkup.

Hi folks
I've missed all the previous about spark plugs and just having replaced them was wondering if the new ones are ok.
The old ones were Bosch FR7DTCs (they'd been in for 30,000 miles) one seemed to have a cracked insulator so a bit of a distress purchase, I went to the local Motor Factors and asked for plugs for an 850 R. They only had a listing for the T5R which was Bosch FR6DC which is a conventional plug not a triple electrode like the previous.
Given the choice, knackered old plugs or good new plugs I went for the latter but now with this thread I wonder if I should search out a particular brand/type?
All advice welcome :dunce:

Gaz i had Bosch triple plugs in mine, Which were tired, So i spent £32 on Iridiums kept them in for a 1000 miles, Then noticed they were running a bit rich as i went a colder plug,
Now i am using ECP's plugs same as he ones you just bought at just over £8 a set, I am very happy with them, Will probably replace them every year at that price,

cheers for that mate! I agree at that price I didn't think I could go wrong. Spark plug choice does seem to be a bit of a 'black art'. I once had a go faster Escort (yes I know but it was a long time ago!) and took it to a rolling road session only to see the guy ditch £30 worth of brand new plugs (platinum/iridium you can't beat-itium types) "because they're crap in this type of engine". I did think about retrieving them from the bin and trying them later to see the difference but he scoffed at the thought that I doubted his expertise! :insane:
