On my S60, ive got a knocking when pulling away and lifting off. Im almost sure its not wishbone related and Ive replaced the droplinks, so, would the bottom engine mount cause a knocking sound if the bushing had gone????

Pull away (knock) then lift off (knock).........that sort of thing!

Its bugging me and I want to fix it :(

we change the front drive shaft bolts for a knocking noise pulling off , Very common but over looked fault. The new style bolts have a rubber cone on them which stops the problem ( old style dont )

Ohhhhh, its that one in the centre of the hub! lol! Yes, i think I'll be able to manage that ;)

I'll tighen it up tonight hand see if there any difference. If there is, I'll order the "modified" ones........from what Ive read, i need to order XC90 ones

In fact, i think i only have to take the Volvo cap off on my wheel to get to the bolt, even easier ;)

So, do you order XC90 shaft bolts or is there an alternative code?

Im not to sure mate, I think as soon as you say "XC90 Drive Shaft Bolts" they'll probably know which ones. Im sure Rufe can advise though ;)

I remember the lower engine mount failing due to oil ingress on my old T5. Took weeks to work out what it was, but got a heavy farting sound under acceleration! And it wasn't me (or as is the case in the R, my passengers).

Well, I checked my "drive shaft bolts" and the drivers side seemed tightish but the passenger side was undone :slap: and to top it off, BOTH bolts have been greased at the end :slap:

Ive degreased them and put some locktite lockstop on them and torqued them up to 35nm with a 90o turn. Ive left it to set overnight, so will post the results tomorrow morning.

Common fault....mine was the same. One bolt was hand tight!!

As for the Knocking (the hub nut will cause a knock) but the main culprit is usually the 'lower engine transmission bush'. PFV do them now. The smallest of the bushes are crap and always tear out. Replace and not only will your knocking disappear but you'll get a nice 'Growl' from the engine :D.

Easy to replace too! Get under neath and have a look, i bet yours is knackered.

Update: After letting the locktite set over night, the drive to work this morning was knock free :thewave: well, im sure i heard a little tiny tiny knock, but Im going to order the new bolts anyway ;)

So, IF you've got a knock when pulling away or changing gear or lifting off, its probably those bloody bolts

Good news, congrats on your expert wielding of the torque wrench. I'll have to dig mine out of the garage and do some work soon.

Just remove the centre cap and jack it up! your dont need to remove the wheel :D

If yours are loose, get some new ones, as they stretch apparantly. Im getting mine this weekend ;)

Well... My hearse is knocking like a reet bugger at the mo. I have in my possession (courtesy of John aka V70 Torslanda) a set of the lower transmission mount bushes, the upper engine mount, strut brace tensioner kit (cheers Robbie) and four new drop links.

It's going into my friendly Porsche specialist garage in Marple to be fixed up next week.

I'll get 'Bob's Torque Wrench'* out while I'm there and check my shafts.

I remember Not the Nine O'Clock news, but not that bit ;) The livid monkey, and rowan atkinson falling down the manhole, now THEY where funny :D

If yours is knocking when pulling away, id say its the bolts. Just ordered mine from Volvo and their £2.50 each

I have just been on to FRF and a pair of XC90 bolts ref 28442 (delivered) are £32.55 - so I think we are talking about very different parts!

I just asked for "Drive Shafts Bolts". They are only about 4-5inches long, so id be very suprised if there that much ;)

Just ask for S60/V70 drive shaft bolts then ;) they maybe WELL shorter, lol
