The poor girl is suffering from a 400 per day habit :( I'm doing the PCV this weekend, but its a bit late, as I think the RMS is blown, and I have a big oil leak coming from above the turbo.

So, it could be time for a engine rebuild, so, who do people recommend? As I've already said, I want to fit uprated rods and cams (N/A ones possibly?) fit a pedro type breather system, and a bigger turbo (18 or 19) and better manifolds, plus, the correct mapping.

Anything I've forgotten, and who is best to talk to about these mods? I don't want a flame war, just some honest opinions.

i've not finished the breather yet so not sure it works yet mate lol

i'm getting a Turbo Tuner ECU to control the mapping so can get anyone or even do it myself with a AFR gauge, i've seen people pay well over the top prices for custom mapping

as for the other bits i purchased them from whoever was the cheapest & got local people i trust to fit them. The main stealer fitted my S60R exhaust manifold with the 19t & 3" Ferrita for under £250, it was quite funny driving away from the dealer forecourt with no backbox connected lol (my local Powerflow extended the system & finished the exhaust off the next day)

Thursday 20th May 2010, 08:02
you can buy them new from volvo and other places but depending on how much you want to spend they do occassionally come up for sale but if i was ever going to buy second hand ide most likley get the turbo refurbed as you never really know what its like and what life it had so if you can afford it get a new one.
I think FFM bought the 19t he had off ebay its a hybrid that uses the 16t housing but he was more than happy with it.
Also send rufe a pm or ring him as he will do you a price on one.
Last question what makes you go for the 18t

Paul exactly where is the leak coming from ?

If its from the rear of the cam cover then your into good money, you may as well replace the cambelt as well while its all off.

The 18T is favoured by IPD for their stage 3 set up. Seems to work pretty well.
You can get them from European Tuning in the Netherlands Paul. Not cheap though!
There's also a company in Japan that does the 16/19T hybrid- they advertise on ebay. I was thinking of getting one myself but decided on a ported/ polished 16T. They're still good for 300+ bhp/ 330lb/ft.

the 3.0litre from the 960 is bigger, the port on the manifold needs enlarging but thats not a hard job with a flap sander

the TPS is the same but you'll need to extend the wires as its turned 90degrees compared to the 850

according to this LINK (http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/850/SystemComponentTests.pdf), the injector resistance should be 15.6-16.2 ohms. Read something about using Vauxhall/Holden injectors (VXR blue 470cc 280156280 Bosch) but not looked that far into it myself

send Adam an email asking, he's been very helpful & i still haven't even bought one yet

think some have had problems because they've gone too big with the injectors & can't get the injector duty low enough to idle correctly, but thats nothing to do with the inector resistance

How much boost pressure can a stock head gasket take?

Hey paul the standard head garskets are pretty good im sure russ and tim williams are using the standard ones.
As for the k24 it might be best to ask rnash or who ever else runs one im sure some one asked this a while ago and if i remember correctly it was s70 chris that gave the answer.
It deffinatly sounds a very good set up and should provide lots of power who are you having to tune your tt

Should I order it with the K24 housing? I take it will then let me bolt it to my ported manifold without using an adaptor?

Slight change of plan, turns out my bores are worn to the tune of 11 thou :( that explains the oil burning, and my forged pistons are 0.5 oversized, so it would have needed a rebore anyway :)

Has anybody changed their main bearings? What a weird setup, it depends on what letter is stamped on the block and crank, then you refer to a table, it tells you what bearing to put in, you can end up with one thick and one medium bearing on the same jornal.

Odd setup

Apart from re-drilling a vacuum conection, it should work, and the N/A throttle bodies are 3" looking at it too, the tps sensor is in the same place, and for the connecting hose: http://snabb.3dcartstores.com/NA-Throttle-Body-Hose-for-Turbos-98-SV70_p_37.html

It may be easier to make a new lower IC to TB pipe with IACV takeoff if your going RIP Paul. That way you can use just a 45 degree bend off the TB and they are much cheaper everywhere than one of those TB hoses with the IACV takeoff already in them.

Yes... I was quite impressed with their setup and also with the effort they put in.

The €350 price was, I think, a one-off, so maybe worth chatting to them before making the appointment. Put it this way, I got about six hours of dyno time plus the mapping work for that, and it seems cheap.

Paul, ill take a picture of the back of the block tomorrow with the turbo connected for you.

Basically if you were looking from the top of the engine in the car on the right right hand side of the engine to the right slightly below where the actuator would be there is a coolant pipe rail that connected to the rear of the block. There are two outlets and a straight through connection. If I remember correctly the left hand connection goes to the heater matrix and the right hand connector to the lower turbo water connection.

No major work now, just putting everything back together, then on to things like the intercooler piping.

You might recognise the IPD's ;)

No idea when she will be finally ready, soon I hope!

The IPD's certainly look familiar... ;)

The only reason I sold them is that unless I overhaul the engine the front is such a pain to change it wasnt worth the pain. I'll no doubt be buying another set as soon as mine decide to go.

The intercooler piping should be a dodle compared to the work already completed.

Have you decided on whether to leave the complete interior in or are you going to strip it to just front seats etc?

Its staying complete, except I'm changing the fronts from more recaro-type

Intercooling piping should be easy, but I have a bigger intercooler to fit ;)

More wiring work, and fitted the short shift kit, got a very nice gearchange now :) Offered up the THS intercooler, the mounting brackets need adjusting now, they are holding the intercooler to far away, meaning the rad bolts don't line up, back to my friendly alloy welding places.

Isn't wiring fun after a year? trying to remember where they all go! I have 5 plugs, and no idea where they fit, the gas conversion wiring doesn't help matters!

You've got me a bit worried now. I've been advised to do the PCV on the 97' T5 that I'm buying next weekend, along with the cambelt and a service. I have to drive it back from Swindon to Great Harwood, so around 170 miles. If it's not already leaking oil, then I presume I should be able to get Home without causing any damage, if the PCV is blocked? What do you think please?

I had the car a year before it started smoking, and, it wasn't that bad, would only do it after being left to idle for a few minutes.

I found my PCV wasn't blocked anyway, but I fitted a new one, which didn't clear the problem, on mine it was bore wear, and this started the whole rebuild!

You do know how to check to see if the PCV is blocked?

That's some reassurance thanks. You have no oil leak or anything? I think Volvo(Qady) whom has sold me the car is just advising me to have it done sooner rather than later, together with the other bits.

Another day on the Mistress, as she now gets referred too!

Both pipes for the RIP kit are now mocked up, and ready to have the swage put in them, new air box have been designed, found new places for the cruise control and LPG ecu to live.

Removed the dash top to run the wires through to the new gauges, I could do with a new blue dash top, as this one has an air bag on the passenger side, which I'm not refitted.

A busy day, not helped by I can't buy anything, or get stuff made!
