Just got back from the garage where I have been to have my rear tyres replaced, only to find that the locking wheel nut key is not in my glovebox any more! I have an S60R and now have no locking wheel nut key pattern. It is what I believe to be the Volvo one, it has a flower shape as the key, does anyone know if these keys be bought from the dealer or am I going to have to butcher them off?

The locking wheel nuts fitted to your car are made by Mcgaurd and are oe fit. Take your car along to the dealer and they should have a master key. Use that to remove all the other locking wheel bolts and then purchase a new set. Be warned, they are not cheap. About £60 all in for a new set.

I have recently purchased a new set of the same locking bolt set from PFV. Half the price and you can send off for a spare key too if you include a cheque for about £11. Happy days!

If main dealer cannot help, do not attempt to butcher them off yourself. They are made of hardened steel and you will almost certainly damage your alloy. They need to be removed with a specialist tool.

my local main stealer hadn't got a master key, they same they need the serial number off a card in the glovebox (like that was still going to be in there in a 8year old car lol) so they could order a spare. I'm sure Rufe got someone a spare key by taking a pic of the bolt head & sending it to McGuard in Germany

Any dealer can order the master kit with all the fittings (Sockets) and then you will get the number off that.
A dealer will not order a spare socket because of the famous data protection act.

Noo No No!
All you do is this. You will not in all likelihood get these bolts off without a key - believe me I have tried! First, check your boot or owners handbook wallet - you may have the McGard guarantee card with the key code. If not, photograph the end of the bolt now and email it to McGard.com in the States. They will get back to you later today/tonight with the code, then contact McGard.de in Germany, they speak English, and for about 15 euros, will send you a brand new key in a few days. You could send your pics to Germany instead - but it is a bit more interesting doing it globally, plus, they are eight hours behind so still at work. I have done this myself, and was recommended to do so by Rufe. Do a search on the forum for more details.
Dealers are hit and miss, and charge the Earth (Rufe is an exception).

my local dealer actually said they couldn't get me a key but could sell me a complete new set, i asked them how that was going to help get my current wheels off & they admitted it wouldn't lol

I had the same problem few years back when lost key for my c70.

I was able to remove very easily with a imperial socket at a slight angle, did no damage at all.

Don't understand why some members say to avoid it, just replaced them with normal bolts, got 4 for 6 quid deliveried from salvo

Hope this helps

:D

i tried the Halfords removal sockets & couldn't get my McGuard locking wheel nuts off because they've got a spinning collar around the edge

Hey Hammy, no need to hide. Some people seem to be able to get McGards off with these tools, but I can't: that said, I think an air wrench might dig in but if that sh@gs the outside of the bolt, isn't one a bit stuffed? and my not particularly friendly local tyre man tried the previously successful oversize socket trick to no avail.
The spinning collar on later ones makes the job even more of a dog.

It's worth a go at that price - if not then it's easy enoung to drill the head out
start with a 6mm and work up till the head goes

Chrome vanadium - not known for it's drill friendliness - which is why they use it.

Can recommend speaking to these guys to see if they have anyone in your area who is running their system - it works, is non destructive/damaging as well
http://www.dynomec.co.uk/indexEnglish.html

Had an issue earlier this year when both my front locking bolts had seized, the locking key sheared and whilst I could get a replacement I couldn't get them to shift. Took it direct to these guys, 10-15 minutes both were off - and I was able to re-use the bolts as they we'rent butchered so the £10 a nut felt like money well spent!

I can't find out what these kits cost.

Same problem with a v70. THree little angels/demons the oldest of whom is seven denied playing in Daddys car and swiping the shiny thing in the glovebox. Water boarding is only illegal if you get caught! Anyhow the main dealer in Bogland West has ordered the key (I still had the guarantee card now thats anal) but apparently there is a hold up with delivery from our continental friends who manufacture the damn things. Unfortunate as I'm nearing the end of the tthree weeks for a reduced fee MoT test. Local tyre companies warned against trying a bodge/drill out solution as heads appear to be armoured. If you do get them out I'd replace with standard bolts/nuts as the standard alloys dont seem to feature highly on the numpty car thief shopping list.
Good luck!

I had a problem with a lost key for my 2005. I assume they must be easier to get off as my local Volvo garage discovered that I had lost it. I paid about £60 for a new set. I had new mud flaps fitted so the wheels had to come off. Must admit you don't hear of many Volvo wheels getting nicked. Is it worth it. Trust luck probable wake up in the morning and find it up on bricks for saying that.

Mcguard lock nuts are £35 a set as i sell them so not sure why Volvo would charge you £60.Most manufacturers use them i think as my old Honda had them on even though the packet they came in said Honda they were Mcguard. To be honest though they arn't worth it imo. Once my local garage went to change one of my tyres and i forgot the key, they produced one from there tool chest and it fitted straight on. Another car some years ago i lost the key and i managed to undo the key with a socket banged onto it.

Thanks for all your posts guys, they are now off and replaced with McGuard set from Halfors, 4 new tyres fitted, 4 wheel alignment reset and she is handling well again.
The solution I used was crude, but very effective. The dealer had said they had a few keys and would try and I would have had to buy a set of genuine replacement bolts, the tyre shop tried there Dynomec kit and that wouldn't move them. So I very carefully built the bolt heads out with weld to form a shape on top that I could force an old socket on to, as the weld is softer metal than the locking bolts (I did try getting a socket over the bolts) banged a socket on and un did them, didnt mark the wheels as I put lots of protection on.
