Urgent help needed!!!!!

Hi guys, got a problem.....

My '02 V70 started good as gold as always today but the rev counter, fuel gauge and right hand warning lights wre all going mental. As I said, all ran smoothly other than this. Anyone got any idea's? PLEASE????

weird, sounds like some kind of electrical fault ? definitely a trip to the garage job by the sounds of it! (sorry I can't be of more help) I'm sure someone will have heard of it.

Hate to say it but I think it's something to do with the dash...ie.. I remember reading something about this a long time ago, IIRC it involves a new dash or maybe a new module for the dash, but don't quote me on that my memory's not the best...

sounds like the DIM unit (drivers information module). Its quite a common fault, my old mans 03 S60 is doing it & needs sorting, but the main stealer quoted £850 becuase yopu can't just replace the circuit board they change the whole instrument cluster. There is a company who resolders the board but can't think of their name at the minute

There is a company in Great Yarmouth that repair these. I have used them a couple of times before on a Audi TT and a BMW. I will dig out there details

There are 2 things to try before rushing to find an auto-electrician.

Firstly, remove the cars battery overnight (make sure you have the stereo code!!). On occasion this has worked on this fault, it basically resets everything.

Secondly, check the cabling beneath the front seats, these symptoms can be caused by damage to them.

Thanks for your help guys. I forgot to mention the left hand info hasn't worked since I picked the car up, thought it was a fuse blown or something simple and haven't had time to look.

Do you think this points to the DIM for sure if the info isn't working either?

Ok, so just tried the bash it about a bit and hope for the best test.....

When I started her up all the warning lamps stayed on, the fuel guage read full with petrol light on, the rev counter sat at 2.5K constantly. So I took her out and I have no speedo, temp guage went to hot within a mile, no indicator warning lamps.

This does not bode well I think?

So, how easy is it to get the clocks out so I can send them away and is the DIM attached to them? As in, does it all get sorted by BBA Reman in one hit?

from what the main stealer said yes the DIM is attached to the clocks, he would only replace the whole unit & couldn't find a seperate part number just for the DIM. However the DIM fault normally just makes the dials flickers on & off, the clock goes backwards but you do get no indicator lights like you say (they do work on the outside but no dash warning lights)

from what i've read you can change the dials for another & they will fit, but if you get the car serviced then at a main stealer the system flags a different serial number & crashes out causing alot of problems (& Volvo wiping there hands of your car)

Various independants and Volvo dealers are all singing from the same hymn sheet here.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON SECOND HAND CLOCKS. SAME GOES FOR RADIOS. On P2 vehicles they are EMPHATICALLY NOT interchangable.

Yes, the benevolent wunderkinder at our favourite car company have created parts that once programmed to a car cannot be transferred to another.

Thankfully the likes of BBA-Reman clicky (http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=Volvo_V70_Diesel_Dashboard) will rebuild your instruments.

Usual disclaimers, I haven't used them yet but that's cos I need another car to replace my V70 while the clocks are away at the menders. It is in constant use and I can't get the bus to Leeds.

I've disconnected the battery today in hope that the brain will reset and all will be hunkydory once more. I know I know, wasting my time eh?

It does give me the time to get the old Mk2 Golf going which has sat on the drive for a month with no coolant in her, so hopefully my lovely wife will be able to get to work tomorrow!!!

So, how do you get the clocks out then? Where do I start eh?

Remove the trim around the instruments and they're held in by 4 torx screws (T25).

Undo the steering column adjuster and pull the wheel as far towards you and down as it will go.

Reach inside the instrument hood and loosen the grey trim by pulling towards you and downwards.

Thanks, got them out, called BBA reman and they're being sent tomorrow. He quoted £99 +VAT and postage which I thought was pretty good. There's something in the back of my mind which tells me this isn't gonna be the end if it though..... we must wait and see I suppose!!!

Tell me you disconnected the battery first! If you didn't then disconnect it ASAP. Don't reconnect it until you've put the clocks back in otherwise it will be 'fault code city' when you try to restart .
