What are the other gears like? If notchy check the geabox oil level. I would also check for any probs with the selector cables (from the gear lever).
Hope this helps.

gear linkages first, then a syncro check ? :)

I had a problem with a notchy 1st gear in mine, but that was in colder weather and fixed by a gearbox oil change so not sure it's anything to do with that.

Try changing all of the gear shift linkage bushes (approx £10-20 for the whole set),
I had the same problem on mine and this cured it!!

there is a how-to here: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=43008

guessing you have the same box as the 400,s40. the syncro are very common for going in these boxes. But tend to jump out of gear more than making it hard to go in. guess worn syncro could make it hard to selcet the gear. very easy to repair and replace.
