My volvo specialist is convinced my 850 T-5 has a low pressure turbo as the car isnt that quick or wasn't when they took it for a test drive after fitting a new rack.

Is there any definative way to tell if its got high or low pressure turbocharger? Vin translates to turbocharged estate on a 97 plate with auto transmission

A genuine T5 has a HPT.

Thanks then mine has a high pressure turbo on its vin code its listing 57 which is turbocharged.

So the problem has to be somewhere else

Unless it's a 2.5T rather than a T5.

what cc is your engine (will say on the log book or do an online vehicle check), if its 2319cc then its a HPT T-5. If its anything else it could well still be a turbo but a LPT one

a T5 should be HPT - it's arbitrary anyway because it depends what pressure you consider LPT - usually it's around 5psi, yours will be a HPT if it's really a T5.

Volvo says its a real T-5, V5 says its a real T-5, the Vin code translates into a real T-5 so I'm happy it's a real T-5 the engine is a 2.3.

The car will pull very quickly between 60-90 Turbo boost needle swings to just below 3/4 only goes above when it changes gear and all the vacuum hoses have been replaced with silicone along with all intercooler pipes are genuine volvo.

30-60 @2200-3000 boost needle halfway
60-90 @3000+ boost needle goes just before 3/4

Do you know what PSI that equates to?

That sounds about right for a standard 850 T5 (. Full boost is about 9.5psi (end of the gauge is 1 bar which is 14.7psi) and the boost will be limited under 3000rpm to protect the engine (initial boost is about 6psi AFAIK).

Maybe he just runs a 35psi super Evo ? :) 13psi would be low if you did...
