Didn't even know it was up for sale, but I don't really see it being a good thing. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

All I can say is that there is a LOT of money in China to make a LOT MORE - so may not be the worst thing ever. I am sorry to say.

I'm getting a bit concerned by the jingoistic humour that's prevalant in this thread which is sounding like a deleted scene from a 70s sitcom like "Mind Your Language"? No amount of BNP-style mateyboy rib-digging can mask the basic truth that we, as a Western nation/society are on our arse and quite possibly in a slow but irrevocable tailspin, whilst our industrious Eastern neighbours disappear off with the future in their hands.

It's easy to be complacent when you have everything comfortably at your fingertips, like the greeny loonies who roll their eyes about China as a "polluter", whilst they conveniently make/recycle all our crap, out of sight and out of mind. The same complacency and sniggering about their industries has allowed them to dominate. Now pull your eyes to the side and say "velly solly" to all the Chinese people who have to read such disparaging remarks whilst working the clock round to keep you in the comfort you enjoy, for now anyway.

Ford have been quietly trying to sell it for at least 9 months.

They're pretty broke & smarting from the recession. Add that to the fact that they're not even painting their own cars now!

I'd expect quite a few companies to swap hands in the next 3 years.

SAAB was just the start, watch this space!

Selling Volvo has been on the cards for 2-3 years, but the deal with the Chineese has been talked about for the last 9 moths to a year.

Like I said, watch this space, lots will move in the next couple of years.

Well, i must say i am shocked, sad and dissapointed all at the same time, gone is the reputation of a quality built product with a reputation of solid build, tank like safety and being able to last for many years.

Hello to low rent budget build, shoddy materials, cost cutting, etc etc etc etc, i shudder to think what the future holds for wolwo.:wallbash:

Its gunna be one of those cases is`nt it, you know.... the "They dont build `em like they used to" thing!:frown:

D`oh. what have they done!!!!!!

I don't think Volvo (or Wolwo as it will be known) has more to fear from the Chinese as the Americans - after all they are the ****ty cost cutting car making specialists (just look at Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and GM.)

Why do volvo have to get sold to the chinese. Maybe they will do a good job but i am keepinig my thoughts to myself for the time being

Monday 5th April 2010, 20:33
They have to do a good job most Volvo's aren't bought by people who think a car gets you from a to b the same as the high end German cars in order for Volvo to survive at the current level of the market their set at Geeley cant change to much with the cars, BUT look at the new C70 and C30 and they are horrible looking compared to the old ones I hope Geeley didnt have anything to do with that lol

All I would say at present is "wait and see". Ford didn't exactly do Volvo any favours in the 10 years that they owned them, so this could be what is needed.

The other aspect is that the Chinese economy continues to catch up and overtake almost everything else at present, and will continue to do so. China is where the Japanese were a few decades ago with respect to electronics/cars/etc, and history shows that they made a pretty good job of it... They brought the world Sony, JVC, etc, whilst at the same time, we gave the world Amstrad. Enough said??!!!!

I don't think that they will come in and have change for the sake of change, and I also think that they will retain a strong Scandanavian team at the helm. I worked for a Chinese printed circuit board company for a period of time, and they do appreciate that they are learning - they are pulling on the strong UK/European technical knowhow quite extensively. I genuinely believe that Geeley are appreciative of this in the automotive sphere, and will do likewise.

I think the Chinese are quite progressive in their approach in many ways. They want to make monkey (like the Americans) but appreciate in stability, and long term investment is part and parcel of that - rather than being very aggressive and looking for immediate returns like the Americans do.

Philosophically I think Europe is more aligned with Asian cultures than the USA anyway (apart from us Anglo Saxons)

Volvo could end up being a top premium brand in China - and they like soft luxurious saloons there - not rock hard S&M style street rod saloons, and who'd argue Volvo isn't more into the luxurious quick saloons ? :)

Mines got rock hard suspension and metal studs in the seats (that face upwards!) hmmm...

I think the Volvo instead of having a Sports button should have a 'MM' button (Max Mosely) for super hard race settings...

May be of interest to someone.

Mergers: Commission approves proposed acquisition of Volvo cars by Geely and Daqing
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Volvo cars by the Chinese car manufacturer Geely and the state-owned Chinese investment firm Daqing. The Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.
Geely is a fully integrated manufacturer of cars, motorcycles and scooters in China. Currently, the vast majority of its passenger cars are sold in China. Daqing is owned by the government of Daqing State, in northeast China. Daqing's sole business is the investment and management of state-owned assets. Volvo Cars consists of the passenger car business of Volvo. Volvo manufactures, distributes and sells a wide range of passenger cars under the Volvo brand worldwide. To a limited extent, it is also active in the provision of components.
The Commission’s examination of the proposed transaction showed that the horizontal overlaps between the activities of the companies were very limited, since Geely has almost no passenger car sales in Europe. Furthermore, Volvo's very limited presence in the field of supply of diverse car components would not allow the merged entity to close off other market players.
The Commission's approval of the merger is without prejudice to any eventual assessment or decision that it may undertake or adopt in the state aid field that may affect the parties to the present transaction.
The transaction did not initially qualify for the EU's one-stop shop review because the acquirers did not meet the triggering turnover threshold, but since it was notifiable in at least three EU Member States, the parties asked the Commission to examine the deal and the countries concerned agreed to it. The transaction was notified to the Commission for regulatory clearance on 1 of June 2010.
