2003 S40 Diesel down on power and leaking oil

not mine but my brother in laws S40, leaking oil and severely down on power.
he says that the turbo will sometimes work and then other times theres nothing
where would be your first ports of call to check out?
i initially thought a leak near the turbo area but as i havent seen the car yet i cant check
if you guys could give me some info then i can pass it along :)

yes mate check the turbo sounds like it could be getting dry of oil and not spooling.

torch, rather spookily just had a similar problem with my V50 (petrol though).
Although I had no oil loss, the turbo was in and out, getting progressively worse.
Finally sorted with a turbo control valve.

garage has got back and reckons its the egr valve thats buggered and spewing oil?
could this cause the ecu to go into limp mode?
