View Full Version : Widest wheels on an 850 wagon?

What are the widest wheels you can fit comfortably on a stock height 850 T5 station wagon?

I am getting a set of steels for my wagon and I'm going to get them banded, but I have to chose if I want 2, 2.5 or 3" of banding so dunno what to go for.

The steels are currently on 195 wide tyres, and was wondering if they'd fit something like 225s on a 7" rim?

Cheers

tethys (7.5 x 17 49mm offset) fit with a 225/45 tyre but rub slightly on full lock
volans (7 x 17 38mm) are standard fit with 205's

Cheers mate.

What I'll do is wait till I physically have the steelies and then see about measuring them and take it from there. They may fit 205s on them straight away and then I'm sorted without having the hassle of having to get them banded.

Really bloody annoying though as I've just put brand new tyres on the Columba's that are currently on my 850  Always the way ain't it?

have you banded those steelies yet. something i've been considering but the steelies are quite hard to get hold of aren't they.

850, thought you've got a 940 now?

i've got 8"x18's on BT with 225/35/18 tyres, i think they rubbed a bit with the arch linings in

Haha, if you look, I originally posted this in March.

I have a 940 now, you're correct, and the wheels will probably be getting banded 1.5 / 2" on the front and 3" on the rears :D

ok. was just interested to see what they looked like. post some pics up when they're done won't you. think a 940 with banded steels would look great.

how was the fit on the wheel? i'd like to get 235's on BT (Columba & Perfo's) but worried they might be too wide for the rim

you can get 19x8.5 on a the S40 2004.5 onwards with no rubbing at all - would have thought you could get 225's on the older cars.

yeh i used to have 225 on the 8"x18's, but those rims are now on the S60 (with 235's) & BT is back to standard 16's (mix of Perfo & Columba's) & want as wide a tyre as possible to help with grip, say i'd like 235 but think the wheel is only 6.5" wide so not sure if they'd sit on the wheel correctly enough to be thrashed around

235 on a 6.5 would bulge... you'd get a 205/215 or 225 on a 7.5 OK I think cause I asked that in another forum, and everyone said that.

wouldn't it be better to just get the perfect aspect ratio for that tyre (even if you could go wider) if you're after ultimate handling and grip?

I'll get pics up as soon as they're banded. Shouldn't be too long really, give it a couple of weeks when the welder comes back from holiday.

I'm getting 20mm spacers too for it to move the wheels away from the struts as they interfere a little cos the offset from the 850 to the 940 is about 15mm difference.

used to have the 225 on the 6.5's but want wider lol. I will do trackdays but its the 1/4mile BT will be mainly used for so want off-the-line grip. I've already got some 240 wide slicks but want to get a good time in road(ish) spec so no-one can say i cheated lol

Nice tyres there :D

I wanna run 255 60 15s on the rear of Zippy though. Yes, they're gonna be beefy as hell!!

the staff at the tracks don't mind, its when i top the list on here you'll hear the moaning :shifty:

As much as people on here will probably moan, I'll stick the alloys on the car for drifting. Less mass so same force from engine = greater acceleration = more spinning of the wheels = better drifting.

The 255 / 60 tyres will just be my road tyres, going for a bit of a hot rod stance.

225s looked fine on the columbas, they fit well, i had bought them for my e34 535i
they were a set of part worns of a Porsche 944 turbo but never used them on the BM so fitted them on my T5, i will try and find some pics although io think they were all on my PC that packed up
