Were to start, ok had my 96 855 t5 auto for nearly a year now & boy I've spent some money on it.
Last week I noticed a litttle puff of blue smoke coming from the exhast when it got hot (after a hour or so of driving) when at traffic lights & when on idle.
Now its got bad lol, its no longger little puffs!
Not sure what it could be, I'm hoping its the turbo if you know what I mean (new bigger turbo) but I'm not sure.
The lamda has come on but it still pulls very hard, I not noticed a drop in performance.
What could it be? Recon'd or rebuild time?

im guessing its not over filled with oil,
i expect the lambda light has come on cos its smelling the burnt oil in the exhaust.which would be normal,

have you checked the breather isnt blocked...
if you pull out the dipstick is there chuffs from it,or if you remove the filler cap while its running.
possibly a pcv problem,

Mine starts to blue smoke after its been left idling for a short time, I reckon its the turbo dying :(

Thanks for the replys

I have noticed little "chuffs" from the dipstick hole, but would that cause it to blue smoke really bad?

if the breather are blocked then the preasure has to releave somewhere,
if it dont blow the crank seal then it might be blowing past other parts...
ie piston rings (depending how worn the engine is ) or valve guides again, wear & miles might be an issue....

Its not leaking any oil at all, nice clean driveway :)
The mileage is just under 166000.
What should I do get a compression test done?

if its not leaking then thats good....so far lol,
maybe the pressure is blowing past other parts.
if you get a compression test done, keep an eye on the plugs when they are removed,& which cylinder each plug was from,if there is an issue with something then 1 plug maybe a difrent colour from the rest...thus pointing to which cylinder has a prob,if they are all oiled up then it maybe a bit more serious (ie turbo).
next step would be to take it to your local garage to check for you, maybe they will know more from seeing the car, sorry i cant help more, without seeing the car mate.

I'd check your PCV out first, and the bit where it connect to the big hose going to the turbo

Ok, going to book the old girl in to get checked out.
Looking back through the service history it had a new turbo fitted by volvo two years ago..... & its only done just over 15000 miles since

I doubt its going to be the turbo then :)

Time to check the breathers
