I tried in vain to get an answer to this when I changed my gearbox a while ago. A Volvo specialist said they use 75/90 but in the end I didn't want to chance it and put Volvo's own stuff in although it certainly wasn't cheap.

I assumed it was manual ?

The info I found (Volvo info) says to use synthetic 5w30 oil. Theres a huge debate over what to use though (on many volvo forums). Currently I've got synthetic 5w30 engine oil in mine and everything seems ok (been 6 months since it was changed). I was using 75w90 gear oil before that, and ran it for a year or so and no problems with that either.

Only problem is that the gearbox capacity is 2.1 litres, and the oil comes in 1 litre tubs, so you have to order 3 from Volvo (or just leave a bit of old oil in and order two). The 5w30 I got was in a 5 litre tub (being engine oil), so plenty

This would make sense as 75w90 gear oil is a similar viscosity to 5w30 engine oil although I might be tempted to change it a little more often if using engine oil as it may degrade quicker in a gearbox.
