Hi all,

Something seems to be not quite right with my clutch/gear selection, and was wondering if anyone could help.

Gear selection as always been a bit clunky since i have owned the car, prob due to the QBM short shift kit, but over the past 2 weeks or so, its causing some concern, see what ya think.

The symptoms------

Engaging clutch is ok, but seems to be a lot of pedal travel to engage,
It bites at the bottom, as its always done, and does`nt slip.
After its bit, the pedal then seems to have to travel a fair way up to the top,
But the main problem is it not going into gear smoothly, during hard acceleration, it goes in, but have to do slow changes.(drag strip is out the window i think!).

Is the clutch cable adjustable?
Or are the gear selector cables adjustable?

or is it just that my clutch is ££££ed?

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance for your help.

The clutch shares the brake fluid reservoir and the slave cylinder is located next to the starter motor, there's a bleed nipple on it.

Hi Craig

Ive a quick shift kit on my car and if the gear selector bush which is bolted to the quick shift plate.

If is done up too tight it is impossible to change gear. Is Does your kit work the same as mine ?

I wonder if the the bolt has got tight causing your problems ?

Hope you get it sorted

would it be the clutch itself????

you reckon this might be the problem bomb??

Why would it suddenly get an airlock and need bleeding up tho?

The slave might have developed a leak, and may not be pushing the clutch enough to clear

Just to check the clutch slave is working right, get someone to push down the pedal whilst your looking at the slave, make sure it moves correctly.

That would be the next thing to look at, the gearbox. Any oil leaks from it?

Also if it is the synchros thats causing the problems and you buy another gearbox you will have to strip both gearboxes down to transfer the gripper LSD too!

Gearbox stripdown is easy, I've done two of them now.

off to the garage tommorrow to get checked out.

If it is the g/box syncro`s, then thats fine, i know of a g/box specialst, but still cant understand why the pedal feels rubbish, it bites at the bottom, as normal, but there seems to be too much travel on the pedal to operate the clutch, it feels like i have to press the pedal down about 2 inch before it feels firm enough to operate, then when i release the clutch, it bites as normal, and the car moves off, but then it travels about another 2 inch or so to the top.
Also if i drive the car "normally" it seems fine, its only when i drive it quite hard that i have problems selecting gears, mainly from 2nd to 3rd. (????)

Hi Russ, what g/box and clutch you runnin in the peril??

Also, do you think its an expensive job to replace the syncro`s in my box?

Would the diff have to be removed for the job to be done,
Also, just a real long shot, but i am presuming that you fit the shift kit for paul, when he owned it, if you did, dont suppose you can you remember what make it is and the spec of it can you please.

following the perils progress regularly, its awesome!!, a real credit to your skills!
Keep up the good work!

cheers pal.

Hi Craig

I run a standard M56H but thats been my problem :( the box is still being modified as i type.
The clutch i currently use is a Helix full paddle but your a way off needing one i would guess you could be lucky and pick up a second hand unit somewhere but you will need luck on your side you cannot buy spare parts for the box volvo only sell a new unit.

The short shift kit was fitted by Paul no idea where he got it probably ipd i guess sorry your having problems i hope you sort it.

Inside the gearbox is not complex matey, I was disappointed when I took mine apart, I was expecting something on a grand scale. There's more space in there than metal.

A second hand gearbox is not expensive, like jamest5r says he's got one for not much.

And I know what Russ means, try finding a diff for an AWD gearbox let alone a FWD volvo! (without spending mega $$$)

Well, after a long inspection and test drive, its deff. the clutch, to be precise the release bearing and the pressure plate, cant hardly get any gear now, all are just as bad, had a horrendous drive home tonight, as selecting any gear, stationary or moving is almost impossible, did the last couple of miles home in 3rd!
Fitting a brand new O.E. quality Luk kit next week, and not using it till its fixed.

Cant wait to get it done, should be spot on again!
Relieved it not a gearbox problem tho, Phew!!!
