ok, I purchased a 1994 850 Turbo last October. Now ever since I have had the machine, it smells in 2 places.

Firstly, out of the exhaust, is an Oily petrolly smell. There is NO blue smoke, and it does not seem to loose any oil.

Second, in the engine bay area, a similar, but more of a burning watery tyoe stagnant smell, not the same as the exhaust.

does anyone have any ideas on these. THe car seems to run ok, loose no oil or water but smells bad

in fact, smelling the exhaust again it smells more of fuel than oil. is there any reason for this

mine is the same at present has fume leaks under bonnet due to breather>pcv< leaking slighty needs replaced as for the exhust sounds normal,,

mine does not appear to have any leaks, and I did the PCV last week. It smells of fuel at the exhaust only, and smells of, well 'old foisty engine' under the bonnet

Could it be over fuelling ?

When did you last change the oil ?

but I thought it was all controlled by the ECU, so what else would cause over fuelling?

Does the fuel pump go off when you start the car ?

My fuel pump hums for a couple of seconds then stops but kevin4878's t5 had the fuel pump running all the time which caused it to overfuel quite badly.

ok, so can i confirm is this with just ignition on, or after starting car? if after starting where is best to hear it?

cameron

Just turn the ignition on till the lights come on, make sure before hand the radio and the heater fan are off ;)

You should hear a humming noise from the pump at the driver side rear which should last for 3 maybe 4 seconds then stop.

Smells rich? could also be the lambda sensor, strange that you haven't got a light on the dash. Try a friendly garage, see if they can pop it on an emissions tester for you

i prob would have a light if it worked, one of the MANY bodges that were done by the previous owner, i suspect he has removed the bulb

ok first thing, i tried the fuel pump. works as it should, ran for around 3 secs then stopped.

before I started the car, i pulled the codes in the fuel system and got

3-2-5 ECU memory loss [I had battery off yesterday]
1-4-3 Front Knock Sensor signal faulty or absent.

I then ran the car on an 80 mile trip, with no issues, no smoke, booted it a few times, and no issues

I will be going out again later to pull the codes again after the trip

the trip which was 80% motorway, cruise set to 70, returned 28MPG, which seems a but thirsty, so it may still be overfuelling?

That sounds like usual mpg tbh, unless you take it really easy then you can get 40 + ;)

Thats at 65mph with 4 kids and the mrs in the car.

what is taking it easy? i was sat, using Cruise Control at 70. the Turbo gauge NEVER went into the white, is it was just mainting 70 all along, and the instant MPG on the dash never showed above 40

No mate its a petrol engined T5 Auto :D

It comes down to about 25 - 26 combined with motorway miles as well, but town driving is more like 18.5 - 20mpg.

What a load of b*ll***s........The computer displays every second, and every second the mpg indication changes. Just to prove the point I sat at just over 60 on the motorway, both using cruise and normal, for a distance of approx 5 miles, and each second the fuel mpg changed ranging from 28.8 to 65.8.

The proof of how much fuel you use is to fill the tank to max, then drive until empty (without running out of course). My tank holds 15 galls, or 70 litres, so divide the mileage by whichever, and there you go..........
