Managed (despite the heat) to get the tints done this weekend, they're not perfect even though I took the glass out as doing them in the kitchen isn't the cleanest of places. Rear window is still waiting to be done (Not looking forward to that one) but on the whole the car looks a hell of a lot better for them, what do you all think?...

The rear springs cant be cut down(otherwise they would have been done when I did the fronts), it's a composite leaf that runs across the car. I have another softer spring to replace the current one with but: A) it's a bitch of a job and b) I need some coilovers to replace the rear springs when I do it. It's a job I want to do as soon as possible but I just dont have the money at the moment. Not sure about painting the B pillar either, I'll try it in photo shop and see what it looks like first, haven't decided about the chrome yet, I like it but alot of it is scrached anyway.

can you not use the proper spacer blocks between the leaf spring & the axle? Is the axle between the spring & axle or is it chassis spring then the axle underneath it? (if its the later can it not be inverted so it the other side of the leaf spring?)

ok just re-read it & the spring goes across the car, thats different aint it

Sadly yeah it's a dumn ass system, never seen one like it before and it's a pain in the ass to do anything with. Me an Mr Smith where going to fab some new lower wishbones at one point so that the spring would sit further down in them and lower the car, being as I'm trying not to weld anymore (eyesight problerms) the easier option (albeit not cheper) is to just swap the spring out and use coilovers to assist the softer nivomat spring that I'll be putting in. If I could find out wether or not I can use standard shocks with the nivomat leaf then I could do the swap any day, sadly I'm still trying to find out.

Is there a giant, invisible magnet lifting up the rear of the car! Seriously though, i like it, and when the rear is lowered, it'll make a big difference. Oh, and get the wheels done in anthrecite, to match the windows.

If your unsure on how to do the rear window then lay the tint on the rear and heatshrink in four separate sections working clockwise. Work from the outside of the window inwards and make sure all the shrinking is done along the bottom and top of the window and not along the sides as the grain of the tint will make it melt. Any queries pm me.

This might help (http://www.tintdude.com/heat-shrinking.html)

Cheers Seb, thankfully the rear window on the 960 is pretty flat anyway so getting the tint to conform shouldn't be a problem, it's just physicaly getting the tint on there is what I'm not looking forward to,lol, not a lot of room for manouvere in the back.

what you talking about, it works on a triumph herald and a trabant

Don't forget the Vette. They don't handle too badly, do they?

I'm not over familiar with the suspension layout on the rear, is there no way to de-camber the rear spring or get a spacer under the centre of the spring and effectively 'raise' it so lowering the car?

Or is it not that simple?

Tomcat
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 22:52
No sadly it's not that simple, the spring can't be de cambered because it's composite (Fibreglass), it can't be moved because it's also used to support the diff in the centre of the car. Basicaly it's a pain in the arse to do anything with it, I have a Nivomat spring to swap in which will lower it a hell of a lot but without a set of nivomats I'm going to have to buy some coilovers. I've been toying with the idea of taking some sports rear shocks and doing a coilover conversion on them but I don't know how effective they'd be.

Ok....finally an update.

Not had much money for a while now but I've managed to scrape a little together to get another mod done (albeit a small one)..

Not been a big fan of the original grill for a while as it was tatty and cracked etc, I noticed that a lot of the tuned 960's in europe have home made egg crate grills so I thought I'd have a bash at making one....

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/18092010173.jpg
Starting point, shows how much difference there is between the 960 and the S60 grill (cheers Al). It's too wide by a couple of inches so I've removed the slash in readiness for cutting it up.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/18092010174-1.jpg
At this point I've cut the chrome surrond off the S60 grill and removed an inch or so from each end(ends are now plastic welded back on)

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/18092010175-1.jpg
After marking out the outline and then cutting out the fins of the 960 grill I've plastic welded it in place and then used bridging filler to fill the gaps. After much more filling, sanding, filling sanding, priming, painting etc....

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/19092010176.jpg

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/19092010177.jpg

Paint is still drying yet and the slash needs clipping on as it's just sat on for the photo, will take a photo tomorrow after it's been fitted to the car (provided is still fits,lol)..Looks a hell of a lot better than the orginal did, lets hope it looks ok on the car...

I know what you mean, this conversio is normaly done with a XC70 grill not an S60, as the S60 is slightly more round it doesn't fill the corners as well, hence it looks a little 'heavy'. It will do for now though as either way it's better than what I had before.

Finally pulled my finger out and decided to do something about my rear suspension, I've been putting it off as I wasn't sure how long it was going to take.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/IMG_0033.jpg
Too late to turn back now, rear leaf and the bottom brace is off, wasn't quite as hard as I'd hoped once I got down to it.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/IMG_0035.jpg
Here's the brace and leaf off the car, just got to remove the leaf and replace it with the softer one.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/IMG_0036.jpg
Here's the two leaf's together, the dirty one is the one that was on the car, notice how much thicker it is in the middle, hopefully this should lower the back of the car alot. I'm having to go with a set of Nivomat rear shocks for now as I still can't afford the coilovers, however the car they came off was on it's ass so hopefully these will be ok for mine (the car they came off was an estate).

Right....after a mammoth struggle to get this job done...I'm no better off!, the car sits just as high as before(ok maybe a little lower..1-2cm's), I've even just tried disconnnecting the shocks from their bottom mounts to see if that was keeping the rear up, although it's making a little difference (maybe 2-3 cm's) it's no where near enough. Sooo, now what?, I was hoping that the softer spring would let the car sit lower and maybe let me use coilovers, but as it stands at the moment they'd actualy have to pull the car lower to the ground.

Got one more thing to try before I give up for today... no photo's as I really can't see the point.

claymore
Sunday 10th October 2010, 13:22
would it not be possible to put some spacer blocks under the spring, like on a mk1 or mk2 escort?
Or even cut the ends off your original spring and put that under the replacement one?

Tomcat
Sunday 10th October 2010, 14:02
Well I've just tried something else and it's helped...a little.

I'm now running a nivomat spring (which is softer) with standard shocks and it is sitting lower, still not as low as I'd like but it's certainly an improvement on what it was before. Can't figure out however why the passenger side sits higher than the drivers side, only by a couple of centimetre's but it's still there and it's still bugging me.

No before pics but flick back through the thread to see how high it was before.

Tomcat
Sunday 10th October 2010, 15:16
Sadly no as it's not a metal leaf but a composite (fibreglass and er...plastic I think). I have another idea for lowering the car using lower arms off an earlier 960 but there are a few problems I need to over come before I can go ahead with that.

Car's definatley a lot lower at the back now, much happier with it, also worked out what the hell was wrong with the passenger side, I'd undone one of the bolts (inboard) that holds the tie bars in place when I first looked at the car, I didn't realise I hadn't done it back up and upon closer examination it has a concentric washer on it to control the camber of the wheel. Still got a rattle from something but I think it may be the shocks I've re fitted that are knackered, if it rides ok for a little while then I'll look into getting some uprated shocks for the back.

Washed it today...

only other thing is to replace the leaf with flat bar that way it should lower it straight away as the flat bar is straight and not bent like the one on the car

Well after driving it to work and back yesterday (50miles) it's definatley a lot lower, however I've noticed the softer spring. The car drives ok on flat roads but once on the twisty stuff it's way to spongy. I'm trying to get a quote for some uprated dampers but being as no one stocks them for this I'll have to get the custom made. Also emailed a leaf spring manufacturer yesterday about getting a steel leaf made up as well, this would help stiffen the car as well as lower it but I can see it being hard work.

May have to put the nivo's back on temporarily as I'm not over keen on it the way it is now.

Hey tc have you thought about what i reccomended to you it wouldnt be expensive and if you took the flat bar to a engineer shop the wouldnt charge much to heat it up and bend it to what you want other than that if you can wait till garage is done i will make you one.

Cheers Pete but it would have to be Spring steel otherwise it would just bend.

Finally got sick of hearing the back end rattling it's head off (been doing it all week), had a look round it today and decided to temporarily swap the shocks out for the nivomats. Although the back of the is back up in the air (although not quite as high) it's stopped rattling, the old shocks where well and truly knackered. I'm now in the middle of getting a quote from Spax for some adjustable rear shocks, failing that it's back on with the coilovers.

Also noticed a slight rattle from the front, looks like the front shocks are knackered as well so they'll have to be swapped out at some point for the T5 struts I have lying around.

Mmmm after having a quick look it would seem that the T6 out of an S80 is a lot cheaper, even a road going car can be had for less than 2k, so a damaged one should be really cheap.

Just stumbled over this on the 'bay; don't know if it's of interest... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/volvo-s80-t6-engine-2003-complete-725-ono-/300483902532?

Couldn't you get some sort of lowering block made up, Like on the Mk2 Escorts? Or is it a totally different set up?

Tomcat
Wednesday 10th November 2010, 21:22
No, the way the spring sits theres no chance of using anything like lowering blocks. I'm going to try and get a new leaf made up at some point, I tried contacting one manufacturer but they never got back to me.

No mate, there still sat in the shed waiting to go on, apparently they do fit but they need a spacer to go on top of the shaft..(apparently).. Once the weather improves I'll have a play with fitting them, need to stiffen this suspension up a lot as it's like driving a boat at the moment.

Managed to get a diagram for the spacers so I can fit the T5 struts, just got to find an engineering firm to make them for me now, anyone know one?.

As the car is eating petrol lately I thought I'd give it a once over at the weekend, bearing in mind it's just past it's mot...I found that both back brakes where binding and the front o/s tyre was only at 10psi. Found out too late to get the tyre fixed as it has a slow leak but the brakes are fine after removing the pads and cleaning them up. Hope for slightly better fuel consumption but I'll wait and see, not convinced it'll be that much better.

Is the fuel consumption on this 960 better or worse than the 850?

Tomcat
Tuesday 25th January 2011, 07:00
Hard to say to be honest, I've not actualy sat down and calculated how much it's using, also the cost of petrol has rocketed recently so that's not helping, certainly feels like it's worse than the 850...

Was offered a low mileage 3 litre 960 yesterday for 150 quid, the owner had hit a lump of granite with one of his front wheels and had decided not to repair it,apart from that the car was near enough mint.Absolutely gutted that there is this big lump of water between here and the mainland!

was this not a standard fit item? ive got one on mine but some fool has cut the sensor wiring to bits. from what i can see though it uses same external sensor as 850's

apart from the spacer are there any other issues for installing the 850 struts?

Tomcat
Wednesday 2nd March 2011, 06:27
Yeah the temp guage was an optional extra, mine went in ok but the wiring for the sensor is knackered. From what I've read it's just the spacers that's needed to allow the shorter 850 struts to be fitted.

Well after a little more aguing with the insurance assesors today I've come away with: £840 plus I get to keep the car. I get the real sneaky feeling I've been screwed here although I'm not sure why, ok I can salvage any bits off it I want and do what I want with the rest but they haven't told me how much they've knocked off the final amount for me to keep the car.

Anybody after bits I will hopefully (provided the R's ready in time) be breaking it at the end of the month, the wheels are not for sale as they're going to replace the crap aftermarket wheels that came with the car. Post on here what your interested in...

S,funny, but even now I look at the 960 and I prefer the looks of it to the 850R, even though I know it's not as fast and not as practical it's a prettier car..for now...lol.

Well finally closed the book on this project today, got the remains collected (along with a load of other crap I wanted shut of) and taken away by a third party to weigh it in. As much as a pain in the ass as it's been I'm going to miss the old bus, even stripped of most of it's custom parts (and standard parts lol) it still looked pretty good on the back of that flat bed. Would have liked to have weighed it in myself as I was quoted £150 a ton just for the scrap value (not including the damn cat) but I had no means of getting it there, still though I got £100 for what was left so I'm not really complaining.
