View Full Version : Stripping Weight out of my S40

I'm looking to drop some weight off my S40 T5, as I've got it up to BSR Stage 3 with a Bell intercooler, K&N air intake - so any more mods to up the power output will cost quite a lot.

I've got a target of 100kg weight loss in mind - My ideas so far are:

Remove the rear seats and install a cargo net
Lightweight front seats
Lightweight wheels (currently running on 17" regular volvo ones)
Remove the carpeting and floor soundproofing

Anyone have any ideas how much weight exactly those things would save?

Also it ran the 1/4 (on a very poor drag strip) 99.8mph @ 15.0 dead - will weight loss make a big difference to the 1/4 time?

Ideally non radical mods as It's my daily drive. Thanks !

it shouldnt be long before pedro fandango finds this thread mate. check out his thread titled bt's latest phase. He has seriously reduced the weight in his 850. He is also into the 1/4m scene I think and as such is the man to talk to

Cut down on the pies that might save a few kilos

As Phil said i'm currently stripping my 850 ready for the strip/track, i've made a spreadsheet (LINK) (http://www.box.net/shared/s86t3fz72n) with the weights of the things i've removed. Your well on track to get your 100kg if you fit bucket seats & remove the rears, the spare wheel & carpets gone should almost see you there

Thanks Fandango,

What's a good brand of bucket seats to install? I've thought a couple of times about getting them but there's nowhere around here where you can sit in them and get a feel for them.

I've been through this with a previous T4. Stripped it out completely...

My view - bucket seats used for everyday driving are horrible. Think carefully as you risk making the car much less usable by going this route!

i got my Cobra's from Halfords, they were nice & cheap & got they took them off the display so i could sit in them & see how i got on with them. I think the superstores normally keep a few different ones in stock to try, can't think of anywhere else i'm afraid

make sure you post pics up as you progress mate

i had buckets in BT for well over a year while she was the daily driver, i'll admit they weren't to everyones taste (as my mum couldn't get into them) but i'd done many long journeys with them

I drove a thousand miles to and from France in mine and they were bloody horrible :D

Around town for 30 mins they were OK, I'll agree... :)

ending up in France, i do feel sorry for you now lol. I'd say 400-500 miles for my weekends out & say i think they were fine, once BT is back on the road i'm planning on a drive to the Nurburgring so that will be the ultimate test lol

I'd go for a sports recliner as a compromise.

Cobra, Corbeau, Sparco... - they all do a reasonable line in these which will save a bit of weight, and be more user friendly than a bucket seat will ever be
