ECU Reset

any you guys/gals tryed a ecu reset, ie take out ecu fuse for 10mins+, then it wipes all bad stuff, the ecu goes back to orignal settings, things like hot weather, poor fuel upset ecu.

ive heard alot of good results from other R owners in usa, so tryed it myself today, and wow, it does work, car felt far better, smoother and more power, car moved, accerated far better than normal.

has anyone tried this on other volvo's?

Dave , Will this work on any T5 or just R's , Cause it sounds good .. Will try it on my 850 T5... !

This used to work wonders on my previous car (300zx) as it resets to defaults as set.
It won't clear any errors recorded though so if you have a prob it will still be there!!

I used to do this all the time, when had the de-cat on the C70 and it was playing havoc with the engine management lights would re-set it, go out for a blast and it would last about 10miles of awesome performance before it went back into safety mode!

Even when had a cat put in would do it occasionally for an extra boost in power for a bit.

Only just RICA'd but doubt it as the RICA overwrites the basic programme(?)
Otherwise anyone who paid out for a RICA would fear a flat battery, The ECU does have a memory which records settings etc. once the basic settings (ie RICA) are there thats the settings it knows (even records mileage I read so you cant clock em without it knowing!!)...

Why remove the fuse ? cannot really understand how it can make a difference the program memory is none volatile surely so how is it reset without the use of a handset etc ? :bricks:

ECU has FLash ROM where the maps live, ie stock or RICA. Adpation parameters are stored in a different memory area so when you remove the ECU the adaption will be reset.

its a shame that once hot weather, poor fuel, etc, affect ecu, reducing the power, it ends staying like that, so cold weather, better fuel, should improve the power again, which it maybe does to a certain point, but ive allways used 98ron, its cold in scotland most of the time, but yet i still got a good improvment with ecu reset

you have to remember that the air is more dense when cooler so fueling will always be better,
As the air intake gets warmer you will always suffer minor performance changes.

AFR will remain the same irrespective of air temp, because the MAF sensor and lambda sensors allow the engine to constantly adjust the fueling to take into account different air density. However, you do reach a point when the charge temp will be sufficiently high for the ECU to start overfueling and reducing boost and retarding ignition. This situation requires some very hard driving to achieve and can take a while to reach, while on the dyno it happens within seconds.

its going to be different from mine, but on the inside of the fuse box cover, there is a label telling wot each fuse does on my car, on mine it says fuse 6 and 23 are ecu related, so i pull those 2 boys, you have to do for 10mins +, before puting them back in.

i didnt like doing that, incase i lose radio, need code etc to make work again

Yeah - well you should have the code - if not get it - your dealer should have it on his computer. I got mine stored in my mobile phone as I always forget it.

HAHA, look under `R` for radio code in my phonebook :) at least I'm not the only one that forgets numbers and looses bits of paper with them written on :)

What sort of info is actually being cleared from the ECU when the reset is done? you have all confused the hell out of me :insane: "Adpation parameters" what sort of adaption? driving style?

Yes driving style has an effect on performance - bad habbits can be learnt - had this all the time on my wifes mini with the tiptronic gearbox for example.

A quick reset always sorts it out.
