Has the car been serviced by Volvo's agent from new, and do you have the FSH?

If it the ETM that's playing up then you should be able to get it changed as Volvo have extended the warranty to 10 years or 200,000 miles. You have to contact Volvo before you take it in to a Volvo agent. Even if you don't have a FSH they can have their arm twisted to contribute something.

One guy took his local Volvo dealership to court on the grounds that the ETM was not fit for use and would not last a reasonable length of time. So you could go down that route if you feel like it. County Court can be very handy if you know how to word a document.
