not wanting to start an argument about which one is best but i could do with some pointers to a good quality semi-synth oil for my un-modified 855R

its using castrol magantec at the moment as that was recommended and supplied by the local independent volvo specialist i currently use

the oil will be changed every 4-5K miles

can i mix oils as the car will need a small top-up soon or do i need the same stuff as already in the engine ?

sorry for the dumb-ass questions !! - i've only had non-performance cars before that have used bog-standard oils so have no experience in this area.

There are assorted posts on here on this topic so check those out, but you cannot go far wrong with Shell Helix 5w40 (from your local Shell garage. Yes it is £40 and you can get some slightly cheaper synthetics, but as I ALWAYS say, penny wise, pound foolish. It pays to get the best you can afford. All depends on engine age and use, but every four months is a pretty good maxim, although modern oils are very tough so would still be pretty good even if left a lot longer. I just like clean looking oil, sad git that I am.

Can't be having you with a standard R - you need to get your chips fried: you won't regret it.

Main importance of oil is that with a turbo it will run at very high temperatures and will degrade more rapidly than in a normally aspirated car. The wrong oil won't kill it, but a little like a diet of McDonalds, won't do any long term good to the system.

Castrol magantec 5/40 is the same one i use. At the minute i get this free but only 4 litre's at a time. I also do an air filter change every 7k.

is that Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 ?

i'm gonna run the car as standard for a bit until i can be absolutely sure everything is ok with it before a remap etc. the brakes will be done before the power hike - yes i am sensible !!!

if you took it in to your local volvo dealer they would put 10w 40 semi synthetic in it (marshalls use to use castrol then went to shell helix oils)

you will probably find it was the other way around, as we also used to use Shell helix oil here but then changed over a few years ago to castrol oils when volvo changed their supplier of oil.

As said above I would also recommend using 10w40 Semi synthetic Castrol magnatec, which is what your main dealer would use. There are other options you can use but I dont really know of any reason to deviate from this recommendation from the manufacturer.

A good mineral oil....

Engine longevity is more respondent to frequency of change rather than worrying about 5 or 10 winter, 30 40 or god help us 50....

In fact 850's are very "anti" thicker oils....

I use 5w 30 or 40 if i can get it at a good price but change, religiously every 5K
