Khumo's are a good budget brand I have them on my car, they're about £60-£70 a piece depending on where you buy from.

I used these guys http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrepricing.asp - cheapest source of UniRoyal Rainsport tyres that I could find.

If you just want cheapo tyres, try the Kuhmo Ecsta - my 850R came with these on. They're good in the dry, but have a reputation of being not so grippy in the wet.

Michelin Pilot Exalto's are brilliant tyres but at £140 a corner not cheap ;)

Ive had the Ecsta's before they seemed ok.

Ive got Khumo KU31's on mine at the minute, £189 fitted for 4, not the best i know but they seem pretty good so far.

Wet grip is good, its not been dry long enough to give a dry grip review :(

No idea what they are like tbh.

Their on Ebay for £42 each, but maybe driving to macclesfield is too far

If you can get them for £50 fitted that seems ok, maybe phone about and just ask people what they reccomend, just tell them your after a half decent budget tyre as your selling the car ( so not to look cheapskate ;) )

Ive got the Kuhmo KU31's on mine at the minute, ive only had them on for just over a wek, wet grip seems ok, its not been dry yet so cant give an opinion on dry grip.

£189 fitted for 4 @ 215-45-17 XL 91W.

I only got them at that price as i know the guy in the tyre place and he done them on a Saturday morning whilst the boss wasnt there ;)

They should have been £216 + fitting charge of £10 per wheel, so a nice saving.

Just come back from Ring, and was running HanKook K110 V12's on 215/45/17 very impressed especially in wet, IC has them on his car and uses on track, car will understeer if pushed but very controllable and predictable, far more I found than T-R1's and cost 55 quid a corner from CamSkill

Heard varing reports on Khumo's many not so good, and personally Would Never buy Nangkangs, (I have a pair of nearly new from MR2 that I cut off rims when I weighed in Alloys (I wouldn't sell tyres, as they were IMHO leathal in wet, and would hate for anyone else to have them on thier car)

I have Tethys and they are a P2 wheel, and they do just catch, although rear sits low and running Koni Adjustables on about 2/3's

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b0s15p15213

haven't got a clue how they will wear, but got 4k from T-R1's

currently done about 2k on them and wear seems minimal considering it includes 20 laps of ring.

I've got 215s on too - they also catch on full lock. The fix is to fit the blue C70 wheel stop thingies - a rivet on replacement. Any catching during the MoT is a fail btw, so its worth doing ;) Have a word with Rufe - he's being asked for them all the time :)

rubbing on lock is a known problem (I could fit blue bump stops but steering is bad enough as is, and most MOT stations will pass with rubbing, I also got slight rub on inner rear arches as run 225/45's on rear

MR2's have a thing where technically the handbrake comes up to high, however tester should be away and its not a failure

Actually, while we're on tyres, can anyone recommend any good all season tyres, as winter is setting in, and my tyres are on the limit?

Thursday 26th November 2009, 20:17
Have run all sorts on mine (I work for a garage that has a tyre bay attached so everything I get is trade price !) at the moment I'm running Nexen 6000's which I can't fault for longevity or wet weather grip (noticed no difference from the Goodyears I was running before). Stunners are good too if you can get them (made by Pirelli) I wouldn't personally touch Federals anymore, there is nothing wrong with their performance but we have noticed that they start to go out of shape after time and the tread blocks begin lifting so we don't stock them anymore (although a T5 will probably go through these well before and problems arise, tends to be more on low mileage vehicles and more often on the rear). Would be worth noting that Nexen also come with a sort of guarantee so if you get a un-reparable puncture you can get money off the replacement tyre ! (how this would work in practice I'm not sure as it's never happened yet !)

I just had two Falkens chucked on the back of mine as my rears died a death.

Got them from Event Tyres, who I'd recommend, they came out to my house and fitted them, and seem pretty good on price. Only been on a few days so couldn't say much about their performance tbh.

I've used Federal SS595 in the past and they're pretty good for a budget tyre I think, and have quite a pleasing tread pattern lol.

Used Nexen in the past too, they seem ok as well, my old Escort had them and seemed to grip pretty well.

Obviously the 850 is heavy on tyres though, so not sure how long either would last.

I have Nankangs on the front currently and don't rate them much!

And half the price too.

Someone suggested Vredestein quatrac 3's. Anyone had experience of these?

Yep I have them on the front, great allrounders, and good in wet conditions, and superb traction in light snow, but would suggest the sportrac2s (I had 18k out of mine and they superb in all weathers with massive abuse)

If money is no object, go for Vredestein Wintracs for this winter and then put sportrac2s on in the spring or >7°C. That way you find ditches....

The Dutch are the best at heavy cars on greasy UK roads.....

Avoid eagle3s unless you are pussying around in moderate conditions, they are sh*te in every other aspect and not worthy of a heavy fronted car....

Toyos are good and very good value....

Cheers Babybadger, nice review.

Had a look on some tyre review sites and the quatrac didn't do very well. The suggested tyre was the Nokian WRG2, with very good reviews.

TBH comparing anything to a P6000 is pointless, most 35 quid budgets will be better road holding than P6000's, they have to be the worst tyres I've ever had, they came years and years ago on a 2.0 20v 850 I had, and slighest sign of damp, and they struggled to put the power down, never driven a T5 on them, and TBH Its not something I really fancy trying.

Babybadger
Friday 27th November 2009, 21:41
The Nokian is probably about right for our roads, you have to remember that regardless of how good/big your brake kit is , it's the tyres that stop the car.

You should always get the best ones you can, the better the tyre the less the abs has to do, the better the stopping distance. On the Eagles the ABS was dancing all over the place when I stopped in dry 20 degree conditions, then I nudged a RS4 up the arse....won't be using them again....

I personally would put traction on greasy roads over all else, but I am a biker, so I don't like slip sliding around.....

Pirelli have been systematically been cr*p on any car I have used, although on my motorbike they heat up quickly and love them.... but that is beacuse of soft compound.....

SO maybe they are great in Summer, not so good in winter or on greasy roads.

I have always found Avons good on bikes in greasy conditions but wear quickly, maybe the ZZ3 is good , anyone?

Have also heard good things about Kumhos as well.....

I've got Kumho Ecsta KU31's alround in 215, had them over a year and no problems wet or dry, yes they did rub but I made up 10mm steering stops.

Friday 27th November 2009, 22:09
I used to run ZZ3's and are a decent all round tyre, however they are soft and wear quickly, and they aren't XL rated so for our cars on heavy cornering and track there is a lot of sidewall defection, a lot depends on how, and where you tend to use the car, you want the best tyre for the worst you can do, at the end of the day your tyres are one of the major factors that will determine that when that lorry slams on in front, or you slightly miss-judge a bend in the wet, whether you need you insurance or not :)

Personally I tend to change fronts at 3mm at least as below that wet traction is IMHO seriously compromised, and always replace fronts in pairs.

Agreed , if I was in Montpellier, I would have a wider choice, and the roads are better quality, but I am not, and London roads are poor quality.

I wish I had left the standard springs on mine as well........

Now found that standard/HD springs, koni fsds, and 16" alloys are best in a place with lots of speed humps/potholes ......

Wise man and thanks for the headsup on the tyre.....I thought they were soft , but I suspect after 1-200 miles they are sweet on our roads....
