went to start the ovlov but the key just spins in the ignition column

Simple as that! Sounds like the mechanism has perished.

The switch is just screwed onto the back of the barrell, think there's two torx screws hold it in place. To prove it's that unscrew it and try starting it with a screwdriver or similar(you'll need the key in the ignition though for the imobiliser).
