noisy VVT

Hi there. Im new to the volvo world and got a fairly good deal buying a 1.8s S40 on a 2000 plate. I knew it was gonna need work doing, but aparently(acording to a local indipendant volvo specialist) it has a problem with the VVT which is causing a repetative tick whilst at idle. Has anybody had this before, he says its fairly common but its a fairly big job. He quoted me £500+ to do it. Once id picked myself up off the floor i thought id come on here coz there must suley be a cheaqper way of sorting it out.

I'd have a trawl through VOC forums, as you probably have Mistubishi GDi engine, which if so suffer badly is driven carefully on cheap petrol, they coke up in engine

would really need to know what engine (does it have a big GDi logo on top of engine)

Nah its got no GDI on the engine. The guy said yeaterday that it was sometinng to do with the engine getting coked up. i will have a look at the link you sebt me. Cheers

i work as a teccy at a volvo dealer matey, vvt pullys do that if they have been run on low oil.... pullys are not cheap but 500 seems alot more than my place charges,,,,,,,,i should know ive fitted a few due to loe enging oil level lol

Yeah i thought that might be a bit expensive. Ive been told the pulley is only £120 for the part. Im gonna change the cam belt and the oil etc on the s40 so i guess itd make sense to do it at the same timw???

the pulleys (6900015) retail at £133 including vat. we do them delivered for £122.90 all in. (Not a huge saving but every little helps, and DHL is a tenner of that price.)

As said these pulleys are a very common fault. many people used to disconnect the solenoid, the noise stops so think the solenoid is the problem, but 9 times out 10 it will be the pulley at fault, we have sold countless numbers of these.
