I am making the assumption that this is a lateish 850 T5/R. Although there are some for sale on the'Bay, there is a bloke there I have used who will do a fix for £80 (or make him a lower offer) (he is UK based) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/volvo-abs-850-v70-c70-s80-abs-module-ecu-repair_W0QQitemZ140338678711QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET?hash=item20acd64b b7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. He did one for me almost by return a couple of years back. When it later showed a fault a couple of months later, I returned it, he fixed it at no charge with no quibble. It has been fine ever since. The only thing is he uses a rather clumsy application of sealant to seal the unit back up. But as my old Dad used to say, if it does the job that is all that matters. So it is an option if you can't get anything else. You just undo the torx bolts (which is a bit of contortionist thing but made easier by removing the filterbox), and send it off. Although your speedo wont work, the car will be perfectly driveable - although not strictly legal without working speedo of odometer so it is your choice.
Other than that, find a good PCB solderer as it is almost invariably dry joints. All a bit of a black art - but easy for the right person.

I know this USA based company have a VERY good reputation for sorting this problem but I would think it could take a couple of weeks http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Volvo-850-V70-S70-S80-ABS-Control-Module-Rebuild_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1 177QQhashZitem3ef1039563QQitemZ270331516259QQptZMo torsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
Cheers,
Phil.

If you're any good at soldering, do it yourself, it doesn't take long. Black Art Phil? Nah, just a bit of flux to clean it all up and some fresh solder. Mine has been fine for two years now.

Well, you have laid me a challenge sir! I shall dig out my spare dud unit and see if I can find the fault - or bust the unit trying! :flying:

A soildering iron will fix it for free. Just disconnect the battery, undo the plugs then using a small torx bit undo the 4 torx bolts holding the module on to the pump. Once you've done this, you need to take the top off the module then carefully remove the film on the PCB board, you'll find about 16 soldiered joints, put some new soilder on the tops of the joints and then put it all back together using some sealer around the edge of the lid to enusre water can't get back in. Once you've put it back on the car you may need to drive it for a couple of miles to settle it back in. And there you have it, job done.

A 4mm hex socket will do the trick if you haven't got any small female torx bits

The abs system self tests when the car is started. The tests complete once the car goes above 11 mph.
