Today while stuck in traffic idleing I noticed blue smoke coming out exhaust while stationary which is very unusual as it was 22c outside and the shouldnt have any condensation to burn off anyway.

Anyway, I moved forward slightly with a little throttle and noted blue smoke now (Again, like condensation, not loads, but its there) then once stopped it would start to smoke a little...and then when pulling away it smoke blue out the back again.

Now once I was free I booted it in 3rd while joining the motorway and it smoked a fair old amount of blue smoke but once I was at 70mph I went into 5th and cruised into Bristol City Centre...

On the way back I was on boost a lot checking for smoke and there non visible now. There has never really ever been any smoke when on boost but there is on the first "boost" of the morning etc or after a week barly touching boost and then planting it and going on boost it would smoke a little, but it was not blue.

So it would appear my car has started to burn oil when idling?

What could the problem be?

valve guide seals? this might be worth a shot.

Stem seals tend to show on the overrun, when it can become a smoke screen in extreme cases. If it were rings it would be constant. My opinion is a turbo problem buddy. HTH.

What kind of turbo problem would you be thinking?

Not sure Bruce, but doesn't sound like an engine problem. Someone will be along to help though. They are very precise in their tolerances and a worn bearing can mean a worn seal. Sorry I can't be of further help but my opinion is that it's not engine wear. Apart from anything else,it's relatively low mileage.

hi bruce , i am having same sort of symtoms, for some reason it does not seem as bad since i changed pcv breather last week but it does still kick a puff of smoke but only on idle.

any ideas how much a reconditioned turbo will cost anyone?

It could be the PCV but the main hose is venting to air (DIY catch can) unless the actual black plastic canistor is full and not fully venting out the breather...?

Thats a manifold job off though and probably wont cure the blue smoke which has only started the last 2 days

Would say turbo seals maybe but definately turbo related smoking on idle.I,v seen few renault 5's or escort rst's fine when moving but pulling up there exhaust is like a smoke machine, they were turbo problems. There is a japanese firm on ebay that sell new turbos dont know how reputable they are or if they are cheap or not. They are doing 16t's at £430+p&p.Believe they sell the whole range of turbos.

best way to test the turbo, hold it at 3k for 30 secs, rev hard, if it smokes, good chance your turbo aint happy!

Rev hard when stationary?

yes mate indeed when stationary, then hold revs out to 3000rpm for 30secs then your see if its nfg lol

In the works car park I held the revs at 1500 for 10-15 secs and then give it quick rev and it indeed smoked blue...

Is it worth taking the pipe off the turbo to check for shaft play?

Its still boosting to 8psi, and still pulling the same vacuum on idle and overun

Lots of firms will do exchange refurbs for turbos, but they tend to be specialists & will charge about £200 for the exchange.

thb i went from a standard system with bbox removed, to full custom stainless with downpipe and just one silencer, it relt like it had been re-mapped again.
better fuel economy, increased performance at least 15% i'd say
and sounds awesome on full boost :)

that's enough dont wanna highjack thread lol

I had just topped up my oil to max at the weekend, will see how much it has consumed over the last 60 miles

Rev hard when stationary?

like said, yeah, when stationary, u can take the hose off to check for play and oil in the pipes, there should be a bit of up and down play
but none in and out

I would try a known good MAF sensor.....

I have heard of this issue leading up to MAF failure....

Are you sure the smoke is blue?....

yeah mine is a blue/grey also. i'mm definatley thinking turbo seals have gone

smudgethecat
Sunday 9th August 2009, 10:39
the blue smoke could also be caused by worn rings/bores, classic sign of bore /ring wear is blue smoke whilst accelerating

nmine doesn't actually smoke when your driving,, just a puff when 1st started and then once it's warmed up it will kick a puff out after it has been on idle. ie sat at lights for a minute or so. as soon as its back on load- no smoke.
cheers danny

I used to get exactly the same problem, cleaned the pcv and fitted a catch tank, that was about 4 months ago not had any smoke since not even a little.

it's rather funny you should say that, i changed pcv breather approx 3 weeks ago and noticed an instant improvement. (less smoking) i fitted it all correctly, found the guide on here very helpful.
strangely though it does still smoke only on idle and uses a bit of oil.

trying to find the part number for the "O" seal for the oil return pipe if anybody could help.. i shall have a crack at that tomorrow

cheers danny
