The final choice so which one??

Right guys and gals, I'm gonna spend the cash on an air filter tomorow so which is it to be? From what I've been told, it's been narrowed down to these two.

My car is a 2000 V70 T5 P2 and if it helps I plan to do a remap of some kind (probably RICA) and an exhaust change (probably Ferrita) in the near future.

It is used but good (oiled up ready to go). I bought it from someone here but never used it as I have an ITG as well. I paid £30odd quid for it. Make me an offer if interested.

I've had both K&N panel & the BSR optiflow fitted.

The BSR is different sounding, but has the ability to hump your MAF, however the K&N is just a much improved version of the original which will aid the performance without changing the "stock" look under the hood.

It's a choice thing, but the K&N (or Baj's pipecross panel) will be much cheaper!

It's louder. Lots louder, but at the same time you need to think of the cost & that the system has a limited heat shield.

Every time you stop the engines heat will flow round the sheild & heat the air into the engine, turbo & the MAF.

The MAF is a hot wire sensor, which means that if you put lots of hot air through it then it will draw even more air to compensate, which will result in a higher idle speed & burn more fuel.

It sounds like darth vader having an asthma attack, but it's really a touch counter productive!

As I said before it's a matter of choice.

I'd pick the panel filter! (and have!)

I have tried both, the k&n panel filter was meant to make it breath easier! did'nt really notice any difference to be honest! it got really dirty quite quickly and needed re oiling far more than the recomended intervals, (anyone else find this)? now i have the bsr one fitted and all i can say is the noise is superb feels slightly more responsive and looks great! but depends on your choice or budget! let's face it in our climate, under bonnet tems don't make much difference when parked up because once you get going again the air starts to flow again m8!

I've got a Pipercross panel filter in mine, and can't fault it one little bit. I eventually came to the decision on getting one from reading through reviews on here and VOC.

if it draws more air in wouldn't it run leaner(less fuel)?

If i was making the choice i'd go for the BSR. As alluded to above, there may be temp issues when in traffic or in a queue at santa pod but when moving it can't be an issue. Can it?

Love the noise it makes but thats subjective.

tbh i don't know how good/bad the standard set-up is, but the factory set-up is always a comprimise

i prefer cone filters myself. I've had many different intake set-ups, i got my fastest time at Santa pod using an open cone

I liked the sound it made too (BSR) that's why I kept hold of it!

I think a K&N panel is the best of both worlds!

Number 1 would be my choice out of the two, but a sealed cold air kit would be my overall choice.

i've had K&N before & tbh wasn't impressed, even going from K&N to pipercross gave a noticable improvement

I think the difference between stock filter & any uprated filter is noticable, but from different types of uprated panel filters, be they K&N, Pipercross or any other is negligable at best.

Baj has a pipercross up for grabs, I'd say grab it!

The Cone filters are good for the loud audio of suction from the car, but will always suffer from heat while the car is sitting at lights etc.

There will always be opinions to state which is best for the performance, but best to stick to your budget & get the best value possible for the bucks!

I think you really should be looking for exhaust upgrades, so a bit of money saved buying the filter is more you can chuck at the tailpipe!

Just my opinion, but there's very little in all types of filter (avoiding the OEM paper) just the costs involved!
