View Full Version : Once in a blue moon...

Well, it used to be once in a blue moon, but recently it seems to be daily on firsts start, and occassionaly second.

Put key in, start car, then immediate stall - then not able to start for about a minute - where apart from a couple of times it has been fine.

I know i have issues, with irratic idle etc, but it has always not bothered me too much, as i knew i would sort it if it became more serious - but this stalling is doing my ***'s in.

Is it all linked to my throttle body? and the fact i should change it? or clean it??

Anyone else have this?

Thanks

Could be a vac hose, causing a mis-fire & then stalling out.

Does it sound like it's stuttering badly before it konks? Could be a busted hose or pipe in the engine bay!

Its a Phase 2 on a W(2000) - Its only ever once coughed and sputtered, that was last year when it wouldnt rev up, but didnt stall, never done that since - plus it needed a service then.

This sounds like it starts normally, revs up, then instead of settling at idle it immediately stalls, no coughing or sputtering - then if i try to start again, it just keeps turning over, so i leave for a min and try again and it fires straight up.

My idle occasionaly wonders on and off, but this never affected anything for me, and only occasionally stalled on startup until about a week ago.

I think there was a recent thread on Electronic Throttle Module's wasnt there? is it a garage job? or can i do it?

Cheers

Yeah, you can clean the ETM yourself, but if you replace it, you will need an update from volvo for the SW in the car. (if not the car gets stuck in limp mode)

Cleaning it can be done, but the problem will come back eventually!

I have had the new SW but not the new ETM! (go figure!)

I'll take it along to my local friendly Volvo garage, they are a good crowd there and seem to care, and not rip you off, cheers for info

Just got back from garage - typical, it never played up once while it was there!!!

They ran diagnostics, but it came up with no errors apart from brake pedal sensor, upon describing the problem it turns out that the stalling immediately upon start, could be the key aerial ring in the column, a common fault he said in c70's - and if that fails it could be the key.

The second one, which i tied in with stalling was the irratic iddling and slow rev drop - which he recommended the cheaper alternative first, which was the clean.

Booked in on Monday for aerial ring and throttle clean, lets see - fingers crossed.

p.s. They had a nice saffron S70 R there for sale, looked very nice :)

The clean is a cheaper option, and they may* put on the new SW while it's in.

Worth asking about!

They said it has to go to main dealer for software, which is about 40 mins away from me, as they are only a volvo specialist, and not main dealer. They said if it is the key, its probably best to send and get software done aswell. I will have to see if it get cured, but hopefully i can forget about it for another year or so :)

Got car back yesterday after new key aerial ring, and throttle body clean, and it is running perfect, it sits nicely on the revs, no more hunting for idle - plus, seems a little more responsive, or that could just be me seeing things that are not really there - but i think it does.

All for £105, which i thought was good.

Also, to add - my stock 17's used to rub slightly on full lock, with 225's on, which were standard - but always wondered why. Now i know! turns out, the volvo garage said, when you bougt the car new, if you upgraded to 17's and bigger discs, they installed lock stops, a metal bold with bush, that removed some of the lock, but eliminating rub on the bigger wheel. He said mine have been removed?? might be worth putting them back i think for the sake of my 19's
