The other option is to fit an mp3 head unit straight into the car. They are a bit hard to find though and you may end up having to import something yourself.See the pics in my vb garage for my head unit.

you could try using an fm modulator and get an adaptor to go from 3.5mm jack to phono. That should work if you can't retro fit one to the standard volvo unit

I tried an fm modulator and the sound wasnt too bad but you get no battery charging or head unit control.I went through all this last year and in the end just bought the head unit.If you want to try a modulator try the following link.

Or maybe this one.

Also dont know if this is any good but you might be able to use this with your head unit if it is a cd changer probably worth emailing them an enquiry anyway

I think that pwcars (www.pwcars.co.uk) have an answer. Ring and ask for Dave in Sales.

The short answer was (certainly a few months back) no. The suggestion was that the Volvo head units used an Alpine protocol and though they have released a specific converter I dont think anyone here has tried it.

I use the Denison Icelink which is a powered cradle and is controlled from my head unit, but i have a Sony single DIN head unit as I took the Volvo one out anyway.

It all works fine here but as I say unless something new has come along there is not a solution for the SC range of stereos.

I bought a maplin hard wired FM Modulator. It all hides in behind the dash, and plugs into your ariel jack, with your normal ariel piggy backing unto the top of it. You then are supplied with a switch that changes between your Mp3 player or Radio Reception. It means the quality is spot on, as your not suffering from bleed over, and you have a 'hard wired' connection between the Mp3 and CD player. The only thing i had visable was a wee 3.5inch jack, which pluged into my Mp5 player which sat in a cradle.

Gonna fit it to the Volvo in the next week or two, so i'll let you know how i get on!

My housemate has the Belkin TuneCast 2 (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=201526&pcount=&Product_Id=166893). It has both auto-off and car charging modes. It's crappy compared to a tape-through device*. Like radio in a tunnel. Could be because the back of the car (where the aerial on my 855 is) is so far from the mp3 player upfront! Eitherway I personally wouldn't take a headunit unless it a) had a tape deck (for above reasons) or b) had phono'/jack input. I haven't found the latter for sale as yet, but apparently the newest batch of cars for younguns have 3.5mm jacks located in the glovebox for iPods, Zens etc. Not too sure how useful it'd be in the glovebox but you could run a cable!

Martin

(*I got it for C$10 in Walmart, it's excellent! Obvious losses due to tape so about 22KHz fidelity, but doesnt require any turning up of the stereo to use it like every other one i've used/heard. As clear as it could possibly be for tape! Bargain!)

i had it in a 306. think it was easy cos the dash is made of cardboard and easy to get in behind lol. the 850 could be a different proposition...

are they?

oops!

Oh and BagR, my old pug still has teh holes in the dash where the switch was fitted for the fm modulator. When i traded it in for the Volvo, they asked what was there, i said it was for NOS.
