Hi all,

Had an account on here a while ago, and had to resign up it seems.

got a little bit of a problem

Car :

S60 T5, 2001 reg (2002 spec car accoridng to the vin number being entered at a volvo dealer, was bought late 2001 so was 2002 spec?)

Symptoms :

When the car turns on, idles roughtly, jumps up and down a bit on rpm, sometimes will cut out. when its first started it is likely to stall If I drive to a junction and put the clutch in, after a minute warmup its fine.

Cause(As told by my garage):

Breather on the engine was leaking, fouled the MAF sesnor, and the throttle body.

Fix (As told by my garage)

Have replaced the breather and MAF. Throttle body needs a software ugprade, but to do this, I need a new throttle body, and it has to be fitted by a volvo dealer or they won't do it. Estimated 500 quid.

Now I was wondering if I can jsut take the throttle body out and clean it down?

I have done a search round and found some links that give the idea you can....

The first one above, talks you through taking the hose of spraying some liquid in, then starting the engine and running it, which cleans the throttle body, but says 'If the check engine light' isn't on.#

Which mine is....

Any suggestions advice would be appriciated, as can't really afford the 500quid at the moment, only do about30-50 miles a week.

Have been told it won't damage the engine, just will get worse over time?

Thanks

The throttle is an ETM (electronic throttle module) & is probably the best known fault on these cars.

I had my ETM cleaned & the software updated *Gratis*!

Volvo know about the problem & as such, will try & fix it.

Contact yer local stealers & ask what they can do for you, explaining the issue & that the throttle has not been responding & that you have "hunt" at idle.

They usually ask to have it in & do a full clean & reprogramme for nowt, but advise of the cost for a replacement (which is actually about £267 IIRC) which has been dropped in price due to the Italian peice of tat that was fitted as standard failing on virtually every car that has been disgraced with it's offencive existence!

Call volvo & go down the right path to getting it sorted. The softwear upgrade is not something that can be done yourself anyway.

Volvo no longer offer the free clean & upgrade they just do the replacement. You can save part of the cost of the upgrade (which as Badger says is between £250 & £300) by doing the physical installation of the ETM yourself, but the car will be in limp mode until the dealer does the software update.

I'm sure if you lay it on thick with a trowel, "oh my car keeps cutting out at junctions & roundabouts" type talk, they should still sort it for nowt, but I guess it depends on the stealer!

Aye, but they're stealing all the T5's to put in chav-tastic coloured focuses!

There's plenty of discussion on here re the ETM but if your primary symptom is erratic idle, cleaning the butterfly valve WILL help and will probably sort the idle (if your MAF is good).

Any local workshop or Indie should be able to clean it for you and that might get you out of jail for a bit but the unit is destined to fail at some point.

As those articles note, apparently it's a bit difficult to get to also.

Hope that helps

cheers guys, appriciate all your time replacing

Will have a look at how much hassle it is to get the thing out and clean, anyone give me an idea on that, not an expert mechanic, but changed breaks/discs in the past, couple of CV joints, that covers my mechanical skills

If that helps so be it, otherwise Volvo it is, when did they drop the cost?

thanks

Yes Chris, you are now in the website love-rat corner! I can hear some moderators discussing how many portions of humble pie you shall be force-fed!

For shame on you!

Anyhows, t5d5's format is pretty piss poor.

It has no "how to" with photos, which I'm sure there is in the (wait for it) how to section!
