as i mentioned in another thread i'm sure there used to be a list of 1/4mile times. I've done a search but i assume it got lost in the big crash, so thought i'd start off a new one. Simply copy & paste the list adding yourself (in time order) & please genuine timeslip proved times only no guestimates

Yeah it is good for an auto mate; my best was 15.05 with my auto (with just an mbc)...

until I started power starting (with additional mods) which seemed to be only way to get into the 14s (and destroy the autobox which I've succesfully done lol)

That's not a recommendation, just an observation ;)

sorry to ask what will seem a stupid question.... how many of these times were manual as opposed to auto?

Also how do you get the auto's off the line quick? Mine fly's when its moving but not sure how to get it off the line quick as my past autos had a high stall converter (3000rpm) but obviously this doesn't .......

Thanks

Mine is an auto- and the only way I could get a good start was by powering up to 3k rpm holding on the brake...destroyed the autobox :(

Been making enquiries regards getting a built trans and no joy sadly. I asked Andy Frost http://www.redvictor1racing.co.uk/ (http://www.redvictor1racing.co.uk/) who is an expert and this was his reply:

Hi Jerry,i'm not surprised you've broken one. They're not designed to shift quick enough for drag racing and the planetaries and hubs aren't beefy enough either.Without being able to adjust the parameters in the trans ECU you'll never make one last.I'm afraid i wouldn't consider doing one as you'd be disappointed when it broke and so would i..
Thanks for the enquiry though..
Cheers,ANDY.

So it looks like the manual box is the only way to go...

Bit of a pi$$er- was really hoping the auto could be "built". Still, Andy's da man when it comes to transmissions- you don't build a 2000hp street legal 7 second car without knowing what you're doing with a transmission! He was recommended by my mate who runs the red Chevelle (in my youtube vids).

if your thinking of going that route i would get a 760 & twin turbo it, a 15g having 3 cylinders each with seperate exhausts. I'd still go with a proper gearbox tho :spam:

There is a science to ¼ mile times, dont ask me for all the details as i simply do know it all. But, from experience, and bear in mind some of the core members of this site used to get together 4-6 times a year at santa pod or avon park, (Happy days:) ) Its all in the first 60ft.

Get that right and the rest should follow, the auto's generally just running an off the shelf map or stock got better starts, whilst the manuals were always struggling for grip. The balance on the manuals is a fine one and one that few have mastered, 14.3 on a ITG filter and remap isnt bad going, Spesh IMO is the king of 60ft, he can shave half a second off someones car at times, just in the launch. Ask Wobbly Dave :)

Shuans 850 isnt slow, and if he has got the knack of launching there is no reason he couldnt get that time with those mods. Good on ya mate :)

Wobbly Dave
Wednesday 8th July 2009, 12:47
Spesh always seemed to be able to find an extra half second out of both my C70s - hence I still think I have limited talent.

ME7 is a bit of a bitch too when it comes to warmer weather. I hope next time to have cooler temps by the line otherwise it pulls stuff out left, right and centre. At least that is what I think.

Before next time I will have my injectors fettled again.

And like J says it is defo in the 1st 60ft where it is lost or found. The elusive 2.2 seconds or less is where the magic lies

Funnily enough I hit 94mph all day long at York and it didnt matter if I hit 15.1 or 15.8

Why don't you invest in a water injection system? It works very well with ME7 cars going by owners comments and reviews on other forums.

were these times off different race meets? wonder if a difference in temperature could of been losing you some bhp, so lost you time over the 1/4mile after a good start which gave a good 60ft time

were these times off different race meets? wonder if a difference in temperature could of been losing you some bhp, so lost you time over the 1/4mile after a good start which gave a good 60ft time

Same weekend at Bitburg- 14.7 was on Sat and 14.6 on Sun. Temp was about the same- bl**dy hot and both at around 11am- noon-ish. Both with the "performance" filter removed lol

bizarre...

Thank's for the kind word's justin.

I do have a few other mod's such as a HKS EVC5 to bring the boost in a little quicker de-cat in a mandrel bent exhaust.

I did a 13.9 @ 103 in my silver saloon with similar mod's.

It's just getting a good feel for getting the car off the line finding the balance between bogging down and wheelspin.. I find loading the tranny slightly is a good thing also which is also very good for the manual box.

Another thing, I try to keep it in the powerband ie not taking it to the red line every gear.. when the boost start tailing off I change..anything after 5600 is just wasting time imo of course..

My estate has an average of 14.4 and nearly always 100+ terminals which is good in IMO. still on a 15g full interior etc + 18stone driver:mischievo

Done a couple of 14.1's and one 14.0.

No worries, to add to that theres no worse feeling when you hit the rev limiter on a run, there goes your time!

Peak power in the Audi is 6000rpm onwards so i will be changing aroung 7500rpm to get the best out of it ;)

Hey Pedro - isn't your 0.1sec reaction time a red light disqualification for going too early???

0.2 is the limit

I just been looking at all the times and speed. I have a Nokia 5800 with a race crono application on it which does all the performance stats. Its all done with gps so i thought would give it ago.

1/4 mile was 16.3 seconds @ 93 mph.

Think i'll just have to wait and go to a strip and get some proper times, then I'll use my phone to see how it compares.

I'd be careful what you type on here buddy as regards performance testing on the open road. This forum has members in every walk of life and please don't think I'm preaching,it's just that I opened a can of worms recently by merely hinting at having some fun and the tartan rugs rolled out. We lost a couple of members through that as they could not understand the hypocrisy. One was even banned as he lost the place and disrespected one of the moderators. Just thought you should be aware....Alan.

it was 360bhp with a modded kkk24 on a dyno dynamics roller on a hot day last year. he's now got quite a bit more with a garrett turbo. thing is, he could have dialled in more if he wanted a straight line car. he's more interested in corners though.

PS - anyone remember what the terminals for SW autos 13.0 a few years back was???

as well as the damp time 13.82, I also did a couple of runs half hour after the rain stopped, still puddles on the strip, did a 14.7 @ 112.2 mph off of a 2.96 60ft, no grip for fist 200 metres at least, 1.6 fiesta had me beaten by about 4 car lenghts by the half way point, I won by about 4 car lenghts, guy said he s**t himself when we came past as he had seen us in the rear view mirror a second or two earlier, his terminal was 85, ours was 112 lol.

Also, big respect to Elliot, awesome time, what 60ft was that off of? spec etc? what car? Jacqs car has more in it on a good dry day run, that was just a run out today, loads of crap in the boot, never bothered messing aroudn with anythign specific etc but I dunno if it has a 12 in it, low 13's for sure.

cheers Pedro, fills us with hope there seeing as our best terminal was 112.2 today with 100m of 1/4 throttle, 100m of half throttle, and 200 m of full throttle, through puddles. Doesn't always work like that but glad this forum undestands a 1/4 mile, tried to compare on VOC and their list is all times, no 60ft, no terminal, tells you nothing about the car.

Cheers again Pedro.

Plan on doing a route planner to Avon tbh, really must get a fair time for the car.

One of the guys from THE GARAGE, who built the car (they built it and mechanically adjust the fueling if needs it) and MTE fine tune it whenever we can get them here, has a 1.4 Rover K-Series engined mini, he fitted the engine himself, turbo'd it himself, built his own ECU adn mapped it. He has never done under 13.5 @ Crail (where we ran today) due to big power, low weight, and **** surface, he ran at Avon and did two consecutive 11.9 @ 120mph runs. I'd love to see Jacqs run at Avon to see what it can really do.

can i just say a well done to TFFM, that's a bloody good time. am just curious though, with a terminal speed of 101mph what kind of terminals were you getting before? what was the 60 ft time? Any tips on what was done different to before? Genuine questions btw, i'm not trying to take anything away from you, getting your time down that much must be very satisfying.

i was going to wait & let Paul answer himself, but i'd forgot he's at the Pod all weekend. But basically Irf the time tumbling is the results of the last phase of engine working finally showing (19T, RIP kit etc), he had got all the mods fitted & working for USC but cheap remould tyres & a poorly prep'd track really let things down (still beat his PB by 0.1 tho). This time with a better track & some (normal) Toyo tyres the benefits have come thru. I thought myself that the terminal was low, but looking at the previous list his terminal for his 14.9 was only 92mph. Obviously you'll have to wait till he gets home for the rest of the timeslip info, but i'm curious myself

One thing I did that I've never done before was to put a set of rubber spring spacers in to reduce wheelspin, and the effect of them, added into the good tyres, was quite dramatic... Virtually no wheelspin at all this time round...

And I took the back seats out on Friday, but that probably didn't even make a 50kg saving....

according to my weights (on a 854) & it weighs 28.4kg, i do know the 855 is different as the base folds up but its certainly not 20kg more

It's even worse in an auto unless you power start- which can end up as an expensive and painful (to the wallet) thing lol

I'm hoping mine will get into the 13s next year after some extensive mods from european tuning; I'll be happy to break into that bracket- it'll be about the most I'll get out of the autobox.

If I could get that 60 ft then I know my setup would carry me into the low 14s and possibly further - I just can't seem to hook it all up.

Tips would be appreciated. I've been doing it long enough?!

I used rubber spacers, they help a bit, but it's more a case of not over-thinking the situation. We can all rip off from the lights at tescos and beat the chav in the fukkus, yet when we hit the strip, with loads more grip from the road, we wheelspin halfway up the track.....

Relaxing, and breathing right can help more than an extra 5 psi of boost....

Also worrying about reaction times can induce wheelspin... just from you jumping at the start.... my best reaction over the last 30 runs was over half a second.... my slowest ET at mini in the park with 11 runs was 14.4...

Chill and just drive your car hard, rather than racing the guy next to you, or trying to race yourself....

MPH1 - 75.81
990 - 12.824
1320 - 15.163

From those vids i'v seen, i could tell you got a p*** start and it really did seem to shift in the midrange, so i'll be expecting you to go a lot faster (in your 2.3 8v lpt with just 135bhp! lol).

i had to drive like miss daisy off the line due to the clutch but it did pick up abit in second and 3rd gear its ashame i hit the rev limiter before the line i would of overtook the scooby sti modded and the time would of been high 13s but that will be sorted .he had a shock seeing a 940 lpt catch him like it did with only 135 bhp lol.

i had to drive like miss daisy off the line due to the clutch but it did pick up abit in second and 3rd gear its ashame i hit the rev limiter before the line i would of overtook the scooby sti modded and the time would of been high 13s but that will be sorted .he had a shock seeing a 940 lpt catch him like it did with only 135 bhp lol.

LOL. I did think for a minute that you would catch him, you did seem to be going quite a bit faster. Thats the best bit about an old volvo, the embarrasment you can cause for other cars, even if you don't beat them.

I like cars that are a bit different from the rest, its 1 of the reasons i like volvos. Thats why if i had the cash i'd like a standard looking s40 t4 with 800bhp and 4wd! Crazy as i am. lol

Looking forward to york as well. Not long now, need to get my car in for a full service.

ive always toyed of the idea of a 500 bhp v70r awd and convert it to rear wheel drive by building a direct drive to the rear mmm v70r rwd.

it would not be that difficuilt using a awd and ether turning the engine and making a gearbox well for a 960 manual box and strenghting the rear axle or do what the evos and scoobys do by making a direct drive and get rid of the transfer box and the gears could still be used with a prop running instead of a final drive.

I always put my foot down on the third amber- only pulled a red once last season (out of around 120+ runs on the strip). Best r/t was 0.020...Give it a try mate :)

A low r/t is not a foul in Germany, where I bracket race...the r/t is added to your 'dialled in' ET and therefore, needs to be as low as possible (in bracket racing) :)

Pre-stage = 2 small ambers at the top of the tree;
Stage = 2 small ambers directly below;
Then a sequence of 3 ambers and green (or red if you've tried a preemptive strike with the right foot!).

You will get the 3 amber sequence when both cars have staged.

what time would be a good time to aim for if your terminal is 100mph ? :)

I'm thinking... sub 14.5?

yeh its RWD, i was just trying to point out that terminal speed isn't linked to the time

my 14.557 was done with full interior & the old 15g, i hadn't even ran it up the strip with the 19t left alone the stripped interior (so hoping for a big difference when i hit the strip lol)

My old 850 made a 13.9 @100.76mph....

It's the initial acceleration that gets the good time... terminal speed is "almost" irrelevant... hamish has hillclimbers that top out at under a ton, and still get phenomenal times coz they top out before they're halfway down the track....

i'm not sure about the summer but really hope to get her back on the strip this year, Flame & Thunder is our regular event (Novemeber at Santa Pod) so thats my main target. In theory she doesn't need much (windscreen, door cards, rear bulkhead & get the engine running) & she'll be usable so could easily hit the track before then, may not be MOT'd but i know someone with a recovery truck. I've got alot more plans (some expensive) but i can always do them at a later date

just a quick question on the 1/4 - I've gone from 205/50 profile to 225/45 on the front.

That means I should have a 10% bigger contact patch on the driven wheels.

Has a similar swap helped the times for any of you guys? and If so... how much by?

Cheers :)

BT's running 225's & there is a big old difference, don't think i've ever ran the 1/4 on 205's tho so no idea on time differences. My Yokohama slicks are 240's lol

best time I got with FFM was with standard T5 columbas running 205/50 tyres... Tried it with 215/40's and lost half a second... remember about tyre wall flex, too little and you spin up the tyre easier...

And well done simthy... that's a cracking time for a 940... :D

on my "17 comets could I get 225's on? Got 215/40's at the mo. Was thinking wider is better!! And maybe go upto 45's again? I so need to get to one of the track days now my car is sorted :)

Wider aint always better, the wider the tyre the more friction/drag there is.

You need to get the balance with having enough grip to put the power down off the line but not so wide that they slow you down at speed (when traction is not a problem).

I'd like to get under 15, i'm sure the cars capeble of it.
Seems like many people will be doing stuff over the winter, and i may be getting stuff done as well, but not in my S70.
So, with a bit of luck, i may be more competition next year. (well... low 14's anyway lol)

Well i think we are similar in that i know a fair bit about technical information (what does what, etc) but when it comes to the practical side of things, i'd much prefer to leave it to people who know what they are doing.
Induction kits, brakes, exhaust are about the limits of my talents lol

my car ran ok mostly was playing with the boost but too much wasn't better so turned it down, my car is getting really slow terminal speeds i got a 15.03@91.59 but another run saw a 15.8@92 work that out i get off the line well but my car seems to get caught up around 70-90mph maybe the fact i have all my mods and at 22psi was only getting 262bhp tells me my engine aint too well.

Certainly needs looking into, your spec with 18T etc should break the high 14's minimum. I would expect a 95mph terminal even if the overall time wasnt that great.

Is it holding boost?

Maybe a nice custom re-map wouldnt go a miss. From what I remember from events of the past, your car is quick but definately has some more in it yet!
