How hard a job is the rear axle bushes on an 850 estate, a mate said my one has I drove into the pub today had a lot of movement...he checked it out as I rocked the car and they did have a lot of play, are they meant to?

The americans refer to them as steering link axle bushes I think , number 3 on the diag

I have just had the new bearing on the rear wheel , but since it spun in january and ****ted a kerb, I have had a progresssive problem of above 60 mph a hammering action in the back of the car, it goes through the whole chassis. I am going to get the wheels balanced again tomorrow, but failing that I am stumped at the problem. Car is fine at up to about 50mph. Tracking has been done and is spot on.

More to the point can just the bushes be replaced or does the whole part has to be done?

Hi,

I had RT Mechanics replace both the no.3 bushes, no need to replace the whole rear subframe assembly (unless you want to). It's not a job I fancied doing DIY as I've heard they can be a pig, and I'd have been on jack stands with no lift.

I might attempt to do mine soon if I decide to keep the car as mine are knackered too. I'm hoping that with a little heat they might sweat out but I should think I'll end up resorting to a very big hammer !. Anyone tried the pattern ones ?

i have done them. not a bad job really. they would be awkward on axle stands. as you need the height. a bit of a tight fit. but easy enough to get out once you start to move them.

It drives o.k. I think. If I remember last year the mot guy said they were creaking abit but he would let it go this time !!!!!!!!!

Pattern ones don't fit very well, the correct tool from Volvo costs less than a garage will charge you to do one.

Update on this the rear wheels were way out , one had no weights on! But it wobbles a lot after hitting a bump, it is not the shocks btw....

The special tool Tim was referring too is available (though has to be ordered from Sweden), pn is 9995497 and is £46.00 including vat, and can be sent with the pair of links at no extra delivery charge. (delivery charge for 1 link and the tool will also be £10.00 to send with DHL).

following on to the above post, i thought this may be handy. Here is the fitting guide for these rear link arms, though it does assume you have the correct tool:
